WHERE TO WATCH

BARROW GURNEY RESERVOIRS
Barrow Gurney Reservoirs are situated about 2 miles south of the city astride the A38 main road. Like Chew Valley and Blagdon Lakes the 3 Barrow reservoirs (sometimes locally called tanks) are owned and managed by Bristol Water plc. The total combined area of the reservoirs is about 125 acres.
The Reservoirs are completely different in character compared to Chew Valley or Blagdon Lakes with very little bank-side vegetation or

trees to soften the landscape. Their man-made appearance is reinforced by the fact that the reservoirs seem to undergo more drastic maintenance than Chew or Blagdon and very occasionally, one of the reservoirs may be wholly or partially drained for repair work.
Despite their stark outline, the reservoirs regularly hold several species of wildfowl and waders, especially if water levels are low and mud is exposed.
Permits are required to bird watch around the reservoirs and are available from the Woodford Lodge reception centre at Chew Valley Lake.
