It pays not to drop one's guard.... a Tufted Puffin has been reported in Kent today....a north Pacific seabird on the wrong side of the wrong ocean and on the wrong side of the UK too! Another example of Pacific seabird vagrancy if confirmed, following the Pacific divers and Murrelets

5 Sept   News just in: the warbler trapped and ringed at Northwick Warth in August has just been confirmed as a Marsh Warbler . Check out the Severnsidebirds website for 22 August 2009 for details and photograph. This is a new species for Severnside (259th) and only the 5th ever to be recorded in Avon, following others in 1979(2), 1986 and 1994. Of course, all this is subject to ratification by the Records committee in due course.

The fact that the ringers felt it prudent to seek out and obtain further advice and information from other ringers with more experience of this species only goes to show what a problematical species Marsh Warbler can be sometimes to separate and identify it from other similar species. And that begs the question too as to how many of these birds are actually in or passing through our area each season but never get identified. Given these difficulties, one can begin to understand the reticence of the various record committees in accepting claims without detailed descriptions.
