The following is copied from revision 2 compiled 1913-1915 which is also referred to as Volume
3.
"Peter David Hansell (Hennezel, Henzel, Hansel), grandfather of William Sutton Hansell, of
Philadelphia was born in 1724, died in Philadelphia County, November 19, 1786. He came from
Holland, according to family tradition, and is the earliest ancestor of the name found here. He was
living in this city or county before 1768, and his name at that time was spelled Henzel. It is
recorded in St Michael's and Zion Church, Philadelphia, (German Lutheran). About twenty years
later the names in the same records, are spelled Hensel. His wife was Anna Dorothy Henchy or
Hencht, who spoke a foreign language, probably Dutch. She was born in 1732, and died in
Philadelphia County December 22, 1812. They attended St. James Church, 68th & Woodland
Avenue, and are buried in the churchyard. There are over thirty graves of the Hansell name there.
The old Church was organized at Kingsessing August 5, 1762, by the Gloria Die, old Swedes
Church. The exact date of the laying of the cornerstone was recently discovered in the records of
the Lutheran Cathedral at Upsala, Sweden. Early in 1800, it came under the charge of the Bishop
of the Episcopal Church.
Peter David Hansell, is first found in Blockley Township where he was taxed. Later in
Kingsessing Township when he owned 70 acres of land, 3 horses and 5 cattle, He built the
Hansell homestead at Darby in the latter Township. This farm was composed of at least 150 acres.
It extended from Ivin W. Thomas' property on the north, to Darby Road and from Gray's Lane
on the east to Cobb's Creek. The deeds are at City Hall. The earliest found is from David Telfier
in 1779. The Hansell land is marked on an old map owned in 1900 by W. Harmer Thomas, who
showed it to the Compiler of these papers. The same year there were old houses standing on the
property quite close together, now 57th & Springfield Avenue, and the original Hansell spring
house was on Gray's Lane. Another old house was on Darby Road near 59th Street. This
formerly belonged to Andrew Hansell, a son and his mother lived with him after Peter David's
death in 1785. Some of the above facts were related to Compiler by her great half-aunt Mary
Hansell, who was then over 90 years of age. She was in good health both physically and mentally
in spite of her years. She remembered when a child visiting at the home of her grandmother Anna
Dorothy on Gray's Lane and that she spoke to the children in a foreign language, telling them to
keep away from Cobb's Creek. In 1818, 90 acres of the Hansell land, north of Darby Road was
sold by the heirs of Peter David to Ivin W. Thomas. This property descended to Ann Thomas,
who gave it to the Presbyterian Church for a Home & Orphanage.
Peter David Hansell and Anna Dorothy Hencht (or Henchy) were married about 1753 and had
nine sons and two daughters viz
David, William, George, Barnett, Jacob, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Charles, Peter and Andrew. The
birth of Elizabeth, daughter of Peter David Henzel and Anna Dorothea is in the records of St.
Michael's and Zion Church at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. William Hansell, one of the
sons, born 1757, died July 16, 1800 was married November 16,1783 to Sarah Morris. They had a
son James, born 1791 died March 31,1865. He married Ann Catharine Ehrenzeller, July 31, 1817.
Their daughter Catharine Ann Hansell, born October 12, 1827 married Clayton French of
Philadelphia. Their children were Hansell, killed in the Custer Campaign, Mary married George
Banks, Margaret, married John Rulon-Miller, Harry, Samuel and Katharine, who married George
H. Earle and has descendants.
The name of Hansell or Henzel of Philadelphia is evidently anglicized from Hennezel of France.
This family is of noble origin of the kingdom of Boheme of which the principal branch is
established in Lorraine. This is according to the 'Dictionary de la Noblesse'. It was allied with the
houses of ancient chivalry and with military dignitaries, in this Province. The first of the name was
Henri Hennezel, who lived in 1392. Then Henri de Hennezel second of the name, who was Lord
of the Manor of Charles Duke of Lorraine in 1417. Then in the next century came third Jean de
Hennezel first of the name, in 1501. He had three sons, Didier, Claude and Jean second of the
name. Didier de Hennezel married and had Guillaume, Nicholas, and Francois (twins) and George.
By his second wife, Claude and Isabelle. Some of the descendants of this family were French
Huguenots and Protestants, who escaped in 1572 and 1675 to the Netherlands. Later some settled
in England and others in America. This was most probably the history of the antecedents of Peter
David Henzel, as his granddaughter, Hannah Hansell Shibe, who lived to be almost a century old,
stated that he came from Holland to Philadelphia. The town of Hennezel is in Alsace Lorraine in
the Vosges mountains, ('Universal Encyclopedia, Illustre,' and 38 K. de Merecount 1350,
Mercantile Library). In some English families the name Hansell was formerly Henzell or Hennezel
and the name Henzell in some cases still exists. There is an Englishman now living with his family
in Brook House, at Sutton-under-the-White-Cliff, Thirsk, England. One of his younger sons John
Bentley Hansell came to Philadelphia in 1910 to continue his electrical studies in this country, and
soon went to Lynn, Massachusetts. Before leaving he called on the Compiler and other members
of the Hansell family to try and trace relationship. He showed photographs of his home and
family. In early times no doubt it was the same family and some interesting genealogical facts
were discovered from him and by a letter from his uncle, who has the family record in England.
They said that it was a tradition that their Hansell antecedents came from France to Flanders in
the 14th or 15th centuries. They afterwards left the Netherlands and settled in Whitby, England.
Their direct progenitor of the English branch was Peter Hansel, who is buried as well as others of
the name, near Whitby, in Lyeth Churchyard. Another of their antecedents was John Hansel of
Nineteen Sands who died March 29, 1797, aged 90 years. Elizabeth, his wife died April 28, 1792
aged 77 years. Their sons were Robert, Luke, and Francis. The son of the latter Francis Robert
Hansell is the father of John Bentley Hansell. The latter said that one of his 'great grand uncles'
had settled in this country, but he could not give the location. Burke, in his 'General Armory'
gives an account of the family of Henzell of county Stafford, England, who he states, were 'noble
refugees from Lorraine'. This province formerly belonged to France, but since 1871, it has been
part of Germany. He also states that this family settled in England in the time of Queen Elizabeth,
about 1560. For several generations they carried on the glass trade in the neighborhood of
Stourbridge county Norchester and in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The coat of arms is 3 acorns and the
crest a 'ffire-boulte and ffire-ball'. The motto, 'Seigneur je te prie guarde ma vie'. This motto is
from and old painting upon vellum of the arms of Mr. Joshua Henzel of Humblecott (Amblecott
near Stourbridge) county Stafford, gentleman. He was the son of Ananias Henzell 'tout pres de la
village de Darnell en la pie (pays) de Lorraine'. The said Joshua Henzel was buried at
Oldswinford April 14, 1660."

On 1 September 1784 Peter David Hansell wrote his will which is recorded in Will Book T, page 421, file 247 of the Philadelphia Archives. In his will he lists the following relatives wife Dorothy; children David, William, George, Barnett, Jacob, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Charles, Peter, and Andrew. The Will was probated 2 December 1786.

The information about the William Hansell family is provided by the application for
membership in to the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania of William Henry Hansell. It is
dated 18 March 1908. The following is selected from that application.
"William Hansell was the second son of Peter David and Anna Dorothy (Henchy) Hansell. He was
born about 1757 in Philadelphia. He married Sarah Morris b. Sept 9, 1762."
"Sarah Morris was married to William Hansell Nov 16th 1783 in St. Michael's & Lion Church.
She died Dec 12th 1833 and her husband died July 16th 1800 and both are buried with his parents
in St. James of Kingsessing graveyard."
"William Hansell served through the Revolutionary War. He enlisted as a private Sept 9th 1777 in
Capt John Byrnes Company of Regimental Foot. See A & M Vol. 1, p. 675. He was appointed
Sergeant Oct 2nd 1777."

On 19 August 1818 George Hansell signed his will which is recorded in will book 7, page 85, file
134 of the Philadelphia Archives. In his will he lists the following relatives wife - Deborah
Hansell; daughter - Hester Hansell; grandson - Richard Hansell (son of Hester Hansell); other
minor children. The will was proved 29 December 1819.

In the Orphan's Court record for January 1821 on page 459 and March 1821 on page 478 are
listed the children of Deborah Hansell, deceased, of Philadelphia County. They are as follows
"Ann now the wife of Edward Pugh, George Hansell, Sarah now the wife of William M.
Desmond, Mary now the wife of Abraham Tunis, John, Hester now the wife of Joseph Danes,
Charles, Jesse, Elizabeth, Norris, Algernon and Deborah Ann. The four last named of whom are
yet in their Minority." Edward Pugh and George Hansell are the administrators. The estate
includes "a lot of ground containing sixty nine perches two small frame houses thereon." The
court ordered the property to be sold at public sale on Thursday, 8 February 1821 at 10 o'clock.
In March 1821, recorded on page 478, "Jacob Satch was appointed guardian of the persons and
estates of Elizabeth and Norris Hansell, minors above the age of fourteen years and of Algernon
S. Hansell and Deborah Ann Hansell, minors under the age of fourteen years, children of George
Hansell deceased."
