Generation No. 1

1.  JOHN1 BOSLER was born September 15, 1793 in Heidenheim, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, and died February 05, 1863 in Philadelphia PA.  He married MARY.  She died August 1, 1866.

Notes for JOHN BOSLER:
A butcher, arrived in the Port of Philadelphia via Amsterdam. He took the oath of allegiance on 5/23/1827 in the Court of Quarter Sessions in Philadelphia. He was naturalized 12/28/1829. From 1835 through 1850, John and his family lived at 602 N. 2nd. St. in the district of Northern Liberties. In 1855 & 1857 they were found to be living at 5  Hancock St., and from 1858 through 1865 at 1209 Hancock St. both also in Northern Liberties. He is listed in most street directories as a victualler (food supplier). When John passed away, he was buried in lot # A-37 at the Zion and St. Michael's (German Lutheran) Cemetery, Lehigh Ave. to Huntingdon St., East of 33rd St. Also buried in this plot are Frank Speider, Catherine Law (John's daughter), who died in 1881 at age 44, Henry Bond (lot owner), Moses Steinman and Christian Schwantz. The graves were removed to Philadelphia Memorial Park, Route 29 and Swedesford Rd. East Whiteland Twp. to make way for a new elementary school. The attending physician George W. Howell gave Anasarca, loosely defined as 'an accumulation of great amounts of fluid in all of the body tissues' as cause of death. He was living with his daughter Catherine and her family in the 16th Ward of Philadelphia at 1018 N. 4th Street in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, and he lived in the sixth ward (old city) at the time he wrote his will on 8/21/1862.

The Northern Liberties had its great cord-wood wharves and yards along the river front, and extensive lumber-yards. The wood-yards have mostly disappeared, and have given place to large markets for farm-produce, commercial warehouses, railroad landings, depots and shipping wharves. Some of the lumber-yards remain, however. This district was also characterized, particularly along Second Street, by its farmers' market-yards for the wholesale trade in butter, eggs, poultry, meats, vegetables and other products of the farms of the adjacent country. Some of the fine old market-taverns and produce-yards still remain, but their marked characteristics have become obscured by the spread of the great city. Long before the consolidation of the Northern Liberties into the city Second Street was famous for its fine retail shops, and Third Street was the site of a large wholesale trade in groceries, provisions and leather. Second Street is now lined by a double row of retail stores along nearly its entire length, not only in the old Northern Liberties, but for miles below and above. Pegg's Run and Cohocksink Creek, which flowed through the Northern Liberties, were the sites of numerous extensive tan-yards. One of the pioneer mills in Philadelphia's great industries, the Old Globe Mill, was near the line of the Northern Liberties, Germantown Avenue below Girard Avenue. BOSLER - On the 5th inst, after a long and lingering illness, JOHN BOSLER SR. in the 71st year of his age. The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Catherine Law, Fourth St. above Beaver on Sunday the 8th inst at 1 o'clock. To proceed to Zion and St. Michael's Cemetery, opposite Laurel Hill.

2.  JOSEPH A.2 BOSLER (JOHN1) was born January 08, 1842.  He married MARY A. PROPERT December 31, 1862 in St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church, Philadelphia  PA, daughter of HENRY PROPERT and ELIZABETH UHLRICH.  She was born 1839.

Notes for JOSEPH A. BOSLER:
Joseph is listed as a bricklayer in the records of his marriage , and as a night watchman living at 2819 W. Gordon Street in the North Penn, Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia in the 1900 census. Also at the time of the 1900 census there was an Irish housekeeper named Maggie Smith listed, but not his wife Mary. In the 1910 census records, it is indicated that Joseph lived with his daughter Katherine, her husband Harry and six year old daughter Elva, along with one of Joseph's other daughters, Anna Elizabeth Bonshoff, at 3755 Old York Road near the intersection of Broad Street and Erie Ave. in the Hunting Park/Nicetown section of Philadelphia.

George and William became butchers and in 1881 they started a meat cutting business called "Bosler Brothers" that operated near the intersection of Memphis and Dauphin Streets in the Kensington Section of Philadelphia.

At some time prior to 1900 presumably after the death of his first wife Charles married Mary. Mary, whose parents came from Ireland  had a son, Elmer Drunel born circa who lived with Charles and Mary in 1900.

5.  CATHERINE W.2 BOSLER (JOHN1) was born 1837.  She married WILLIAM J. LAW.  He was born 1833.

Notes for WILLIAM J. LAW:
William Law was a coachman. In 1859 he lived at 1018 Joy Place, and in 1863 he lived at 1018 N. 4th St., quite possibly the same residence. Both are located in the Northern Liberties area of Philadelphia. In 1880 they lived at 1206 Cuthbert St.

13.  OLIVER RICHARD5 BOSLER (JOSEPH ANDREW JACKSON4, JOHN MARTIN3, JOSEPH A.2, JOHN1) was born September 10, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA, and died September 09, 1992 in Jacksonville FL.  He married EDITH BERTHA KANAVEL July 18, 1942 in Philadelphia, PA, daughter of ERNEST KANAVEL and EDITH BARRETT.  She was born February 17, 1923 in Philadelphia PA.

Notes for OLIVER RICHARD BOSLER:
Served in WW2 with the 77th Division, as a Liaison for the medics. Won the  Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Served in Guam, Leyte, Okinawa and Japan. In the post war years he worked at Link Belt in Philadelphia and in 1949 moved to 1519 Ramble Rd. Parkland PA. He worked as an artesian well driller for several years and then started his own roofing and siding business. He retired to Jacksonville FL where he lived till his death.

Notes for EDITH BERTHA KANAVEL:
During World war II Edith raised her infant son Richard alone and worked full time while her husband Oliver served in the Pacific theater. Edith served with the Langhorne Observation Post ground observers in the post war years. She was active in community affairs contributing time and money to the local school district, and was a den mother for the local Cub Scout Troop. Cemetery lots at Sunset Memorial Park, County Line Rd, Somerton Philadelphia.
