Discussion
questions:
1.
The title and first scene of the
book leave no mistake about the
story. How do you feel about this
way of structure/telling? Would you
have liked another title better? Did
it bother you that you kind of knew
what was coming so early in the
book? Why / why not?
2.
There are five Lisbon girls, all
different, but some more than the
others. How is Cecilia (with her
dress) different from the rest? How
is Lux (with her records) different
from the rest? Do they represent
something? Is this difference
present in the movie? How?
3.
"After denuding the trunk, the
men left to denude others, and for a
time the tree stood blighted, trying
to raise its stunted arms, a
creature clubbed mute, only its
sudden voiceless ness making us
realize it had been speaking all
along." This is a quote from
chapter 4. At that point the tree
disease is spreading throughout the
neighborhood. What does this quote
say about the Lisbon story? Why do
the Lisbon girls at one point try to
save one tree? What does this quote
say about the "us" (we) as
narrator?
4.
What makes Trip Fontaine
different from the other boys? What
makes him stand out, makes him
special? How come Trip was the only
one who could get close to Lux (and
with close I don't mean the
"roof activities")? Was
Trip portrayed at the same way in
the movie?
5.
At what point in the story did the
Lisbon sisters became individuals,
did they become their own character
(for you and/or for the boys)? What
made it that point for you?
6.
At the end of the book, the boys admit that they still do not understand
the girls' deaths. How does this
failure affect the novel? In what
ways uses the novel their
"imperfect knowledge"?
(we already discussed this a bit,
but...) Why do you think the girls
committed suicide?
Do you think the reasons were different for each of the girls?
