Trivia facts:
Actress Finty Williams, who plays Lady Bracknell as
a young dancer, is the daughter of Dame Judi Dench,
who plays the older Lady Bracknell.
The scenes where Rupert Everett slaps Colin Firth on
his rear end and where Rupert kisses Colin's cheek
were ad libs. Director, Oliver Parker, thought Firth's
stunned reaction was so humorous he decided to
leave them in.

Discussion
questions:
1. Why or how is The Importance of Being Earnest funny? Can you give some examples of Wildean wit? Is there a difference between being “witty” and being “funny”?
2. A play differs from a novel or film in that it requires a performance by live actors pretending to be characters they are not before a live audience that allows itself to be fooled. What is gained by the fact that The Importance of Being Earnest was written as a play?
3. Which union — Jack’s with Gwendolen or Algernon’s with
Cecily — seems more likely to succeed? Why?
