Discussion
questions:
1.
John F. Nash is described in the
movie and in many articles as a true
genius. What is your definition of a
genius and do you think John Nash is
a true genius? If not, who do you
think is a true genius?
2.
Isaac Newton wrote in a letter to
fellow scientist Robert Hooke on
5th. February 1676 "If I have
seen further it is by standing on
the shoulders of giants" and
Ralph Emerson said "Genius
borrows nobly". Do you think
these statements are true? Do they
apply to John F. Nash as well?
3.
After his amazing discovery, John F.
Nash was diagnosed as a
schizophrenic. How is his disease
described in the book and how is it
portrayed in the movie? What do you
think of the way in which this was
done? Did it change your opinion
about schizophrenia and
schizophrenics?
4.
What do you think of the casting of
the movie? Would you have picked
Russell Crowe to play a genius
suffering from schizophrenia? And
what do you think of his
performance?
5.
Both the book and the movie are
called 'A Beautiful Mind'. Why do
you think they choose that title?
6.
Nash's theory - also known as the
prisoner's dilemma - states that
when individuals chose the best
solution for their situation, the
overall outcome may not be optimal.
The outcome is only optimal when
there is a total co-operation within
the group and each individual
chooses the best solution for itself
and for the group. Critics say that
the theory is very rational and
lacks emotion. Do you agree with
this? Do you think that an emotional
or unemotional theory could only
have been created by someone like
John F. Nash?
