Television Interviews and Appearances

Bonnie is a regular guest on many shows like Letterman, Leno and Tom Snyder. The following is just the shows and dates that I am aware of. If anyone has copies of these or any other Bonnie interviews please email me. I would love copies and would pay for all costs.

Bonnie Hunt:

"The interviewers I truly enjoy, like David Letterman, are the hosts that truly listen and then respond, instead of the talk shows that are over-produced, where every word is planned and, God forbid, you improvise or go off on a different topic and get that glazed look from the host as he automatically goes into a planned response. Those interviews have been few and far between for me, but when they do happen, they're tough because I find the insincerity somewhat embarrassing. But for the most part I've loved doing talk shows."

WTMX Morning Chicago Radio Show
Friday 24 October 2002
Bonnie's Mom was on by phone. She was talking about making Pumpkin Pie for a crowd by making it in a sheet cake type thing. Bonnie said she won't be home for Thanksgiving. I think she said she works at the Mission in LA, but she will be home for Christmas. She is also going to be on the ABC Christmas Special and sing I'll Be Home For Christmas. She talked about different people she has worked with over the years. She was asked for comments about the different guys she worked with and basically, she loves Tom Hanks, she says David Schwimmer has a great physique, she mentioned that when she worked with Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, he called her Mom at work, arranged for her Mom to get the next day off and brought her Mom and her sisters to the set the next day, all as a surprise. She also mentioned that she went to Vegas, I think it was Labor Day weekend, with Robin William and Don RIckles and their wives, and her hubby. Sounded like that was a riot. Apparently an old friend from Chicago ran into her husband at one of the tables and was stopping to ask how he was and was left speechless as he or she spotted Robin Williams at the table with him.

Discussing Life With Bonnie

ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT: Was there ever a point in developing this series where you said, "Do I really need to do this again?" Or, "Do I need to put it out there and maybe have it be as short-lived as the last two series were?"

BONNIE HUNT: I really can be perfectly honest in saying that when you fail by your own standards, it is a form of success. So yeah, there's always a hesitation because when you fail, it's pretty public, and not to mention that everybody in your family has an idea on how you could have fixed it.
Uncle Chester always calls and goes, "You know what the problem was? The girl next door. She was dragging you down." You worry about it, but no. I'm trilled to be employed and working with my friends and people that I admire. You're just lucky to work. That's the bottom line.

ET: Did you seek input from any relatives on this to avoid those phone calls later on?

BONNIE:No. I love their phone calls. That's where I get all my characters.

ET: Can you talk a little bit about the genesis of the idea for this project? Did it start out with the talk show or with the family? How much is the balance going toward one or the other?

BONNIE: I think we will find our way with that depending on what's more fun or more relatable. Every story is unique to itself, each episode. Wherever the strength is that week, that's where we will go.
But as far as the genesis of it, we were actually working on a film at the time at MGM, and Don and I have two computers. I had gone through all of these talks about taking over ROSIE O'DONNELL's job, or possibly going onto the REGIS PHILBIN show. I wasn't interested in doing that, but I thought it would be something fun to play in a show
So at the same time I'm writing on the script, I said, "I just had an idea for a show I'd like to do, because I want to go back to television because I love the process. And I said, "What if I'm a talk show host of a local morning talk show, I'm a mom and I can actually interview real guests?"
Don turned his computer around in the middle of the screenplay we're writing. He wrote down, "Local talk show host and mother." He had the exact same idea without us speaking about it.

ET: Are the talk show segments the only parts that are improvised?

BONNIE: Everything is done straight through. We are not a retake show. We are mostly theater actors. That's why I hired all these people. We go straight through and do the show for the momentum.
I think no matter how many times you see an episode of "The Honeymooners," it always feels fresh. They were in front of that audience. They were always serving the timing and the moment, and it lasts forever. The talk show guests are not actors. So if they retake something that happened naturally, it would be a disaster.

ET: For the talk show segments, did you have anybody who inspired you?

BONNIE: It seemed a lot like "Letterman." I love talk shows. I love the format, and for me it's a chance to be able to do something that's fresh and funny, but not do it every single day and have guests whose movies I don't really like but pretend I do. That would be painful for me.
We do have plans to have on some of our friends who are actors and we will have fake movie clips. We've had fun writing that stuff.

ET: Why was it important that your character have a fake last name as opposed to shows like "Drew Carey" where he uses his real name?

BONNIE: I don't know. I mean there's no big secret behind it. Actually, I think her name was Kate or something to begin with. And then the network said, "Do you mind calling her Bonnie?" And I thought it was probably a surefire way for me to get the role if I changed the name.
