My summer home is a cabin in Gothic, Colorado, altitude 9,500 feet, 8.5 miles north of Crested Butte, on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains. My husband is a biology professor at the University of Maryland and he does research on wildflowers, insects, and hummingbirds at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic. We live in the cabin from late May through August, and often return for some of October and January. In 2001 we added a well, so now we have running water!

I hike with friends as often as possible while in the mountains. This is a photo I took in July,2005.

The cabin is great but the road there is closed by snow for almost six months each year. David and I have bought another house in western Colorado where we plan to live after his retirement from the university. Until then, we are renting it out: 3 bedrooms, lovely views, 3 miles from Paonia, about 1.5 hours drive from Gothic.

In August of 2001, we rafted the Grand Canyon. It was a great trip with family and friends. It took David 11 years to get the permit. It was an exciting vacation, camping on a different beach each night for 18 days. We enjoyed another Grand Canyon raft trip in April and May of 2005. Below are a couple of photos that David took. The climber in the narrow side-canyon is our older son, Brian. The camp is at Blacktail Canyon, where we had a flash flood during the night!

David and I had a great time in Japan in October, 2003. One of my favorite places was an indigo dye house in Kyoto, where the owner showed me many wonderful fabrics and rooms. I think it helped that I was wearing a vest that I wove with hand-dyed yarns.

David and I have two sons. Brian Inouye and Nora Underwood were married in 1995, wearing handwoven silk (you can see a photo from their wedding to the right). Brian and Nora both have PhD degrees from Duke University, and then did postdoctoral work at UC-Davis. They live in Tallahassee, Florida, and teach in the Biology Department at Florida State University.
