I like Vinnie's word of the day (uh, fear of the day?) so I'm going to copy him (I hope he doesn't mind) and do it, too.

Word of the Day for Friday October 19, 2001:

extemporaneous \ek-stem-puh-RAY-nee-us\, adjective:
1. Composed, performed, or uttered on the spur of the moment, or without previous study; unpremeditated; impromptu.
2. Prepared beforehand but delivered without notes or text.
3. Skilled at or given to extemporaneous speech.
4. Provided, made, or put to use as an expedient; makeshift.

I like the sound of this word, but it scares me. I'm one of the worst extemporaneous speakers in the world. I'm sure of it. I don't do that well with notes. Even the thought of speaking to a crowd without notes terrifies me. Posted by TI Anne at 9:51 AM | link | Comment

I think everytime the media (or whoever is trying to do it) attempts to gain our sympathy for people in Afghanistan, they should then show this slideshow to remind us why we're at war. Have the people trying to make us feel sorry for Afghanistan forgotten that on Sept. 11 thousands of Americans were killed? This slideshow should make an indelible mark on your brain and make it impossible to forget. Posted by TI Anne at 9:02 AM | link | Comment

Time for another quiz. What kind of animal are you?

I'm a penguin. "Now you see it, now you don't. Aggressive yet gentle, outgoing but shy, stable yet flighty -- everyone sees the penguin in a different way. It's that black and white thing -- the penguin only reveals the side that it wants to you to see. So, whether you like this darling-devil or not, you have to concede that it's a fascinating and enigmatic individual." There's more stuff about my penguin self here.

Famous penguins include Oscar Wilde, Truman Capote and Danny Devito. Posted by TI Anne at 8:39 AM | link | Comment

This was posted on the message board of an online group I belong to:

Subject: Virus Alert (This is the virus from hell!)

Consider yourself warned.
If you receive an e-mail entitled "BAD TIMES," delete it IMMEDIATELY.
Do not open it. Apparently this one is pretty nasty. It will not only
erase everything on your hard drive, but it will also delete
anything on disks within 20 feet of your computer. It
demagnetizes the strips on ALL of your credit cards. It
reprograms your ATM access code, screws up the tracking on
your VCR and uses subspace field harmonics to scratch any CDs
you attempt to play. It will program your phone auto-dial to call
only 900 numbers. This virus will mix antifreeze into your fish tank.

IT WILL CAUSE YOUR TOILET TO FLUSH WHILE YOU ARE SHOWERING.

It will drink ALL your beer. FOR GOD'S SAKE, ARE YOU LISTENING??
It will leave dirty underwear on the coffee table when you are
expecting company. It will replace your shampoo with Nair and
your Nair with Rogaine, all the while dating your current
boy/girlfriend behind your back and billing their motel
rendezvous to your Visa card. It will cause you to run with
scissors and throw things in a way that is only fun until someone
loses an eye. It will rewrite your backup files, changing all your
active verbs to passive tense and incorporating undetectable
misspellings which grossly change the interpretations of key
sentences. If the "BAD TIMES" message opened in a Windows
95/98 environment, it will leave the toilet seat up and leave your
hair dryer plugged in dangerously close to a full bathtub. It will
refill your skim milk with whole milk.

******** WARN AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN!!!*******

And if you don't send this to 5000 people in 20 seconds you'll fart
so hard that your right leg will spasm and shoot straight out in
front of you, sending sparks that will ignite the person nearest you.
Send to everyone ..... Posted by TI Anne at 7:53 AM | link | Comment

Today's odd news story is: Toothbrush swallower to aid charity Seems a 23-year-old student teacher was in a hurry to get to class, stumbled in her bathroom and swallowed her toothbrush. It had to be surgically removed from her stomach.

As if that isn't strange enough, a related story offers advice on how not to use a toothbrush. Is this article really necessary? Apparently so. Just ask the 69-old man who used a toothbrush to relieve hemorrhoid pain and got it stuck, well, you know where.

Add both of these folks to the growing list of people who make me shake my head in disbelief. Posted by TI Anne at 8:16 AM | link | Comment

I couldn't help but laugh about this. I was checking the hit counter on my other blog, and it seems that someone found his/her way to my site by doing a search on Google for "matt lauer gay." (Oh good, now the next time someone does that search, maybe this site will come up too!)

Anyway, I did not suggest Matt Lauer is gay. On Sept. 6 I wrote about his interview with Anne Heche. Four paragraphs previous to that I wrote about gay people on television.

At least I can figure out how that came up in a search. I'll never understand how "japanese redhead with pigtails" gets people to Shell's site. Posted by TI Anne at 11:31 AM | link | Comment

Either this is hilarious or I'm really tired and in dire need of good entertainment. I think part of the reason I find it so funny is that I have an online "friend" who believes, and passes on, every piece of forwarded e-mail she receives. I also belong to an online group in which some of the members are the most gullible (read: stupid) people on the face of the earth. This is an Urban Legend Generator. Here's one it generated for me:

I know this may be hard to believe, but it's completely true. I know for sure that it happened to a person who went to my college. It happened while he was driving home alone at night. Apparently, he was abducted by terrorists. Before he even knew what happened, he had both kidneys stolen!

Think about that next time you're driving home alone at night.

As with any other information that you receive from questionable sources such as this, it is wise to believe everything that you have read here without questioning it or attempting to verify it in any way. Make sure to pass the story along to everyone you know, too. Imagine how you'd feel if you opened up tomorrow's newspaper and found out that someone you know had both kidneys stolen.

I may do a new one every week and send it to my "friend." Posted by TI Anne at 10:12 AM | link | Comment

I didn't know this man. However, he was one of my brother's best friends and my brother feels the loss very deeply. I feel the need to post this brief obituary from USA Today.

Robert Peraza, 30, of New York City was a broker at Cantor Fitzgerald in the north tower. "He was born in 1971 when they first started building the World Trade Center. And now, 30 years later, in 2001, that's his coffin," said his mother, Suzanne Peraza of Mason, Ohio. His father, Bob, is a Procter & Gamble employee and president of Cincinnati's Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Robert and Suzanne Peraza, parents of Robert Peraza '94, have established The Robert David Peraza Scholarship. They have requested that donations be made to this scholarship in Rob's memory. Make checks payable to the Robert Peraza Scholarship.
Mail donations to:

Although I didn't know Katie McGarry Noack '92, I do know her sisters Marianne McGarry Burke '82 & Deb McGarry Brink '83, as well as Marianne's husband, Joe. My thoughts and prayers are with them and the families of all the victims.

Patti at I Really Must Insist You Leave and Lavonne at : : b o r n f a m o u s : : both have interesting entries on firefighters as heroes. I also have looked upon firefighters as heroes for as long as I can remember.

I grew up living next door to a firefighter. His children are the same ages as me, my sister and brother so we all talked about their feelings everytime their father went out on a call -- and they weren't sure if he would come back. But, thankfully, he always did come back. He always downplayed what he did on those calls. We rarely knew what he did, how serious the call was, until we read it in the paper the next day.

Later in my life, I was the one who got to write those newspaper stories. Anyone who doesn't have an appreciation of the job firefighters do should work as a reporter and cover just one fire up close. There aren't many professions in which a person puts his life on the line for other people -- to save them and their property. Seeing the skill and dedication is awe-inspiring.

When I was the police/fire reporter, I used to say I liked writing fire stories "as long as no one gets hurt." That wasn't always the case. In the instances when people were injured, whether it be one of their own or a civilian, the firefighters always took it personally. I could see it in their eyes when they tried to hold back the tears, hear it in their cracking voices.

Fire stories when no one is injured are easy to write. You get to use phrases like "flames licked the sides of the house ...," "heat pushed firefighters back from the door but they pushed back with a vengence...," "thick, black smoke filled the air, billowing upward, creating ominous clouds in the dark night sky ...." As long as it was necessary to write stories about fires, the firefighters I worked with were happy with the work I did. Many of them thanked me for capturing the essence of their jobs.

I got to be friends with some of them, even spending time at the fire station instead of just calling on the phone when I needed to interview the chief or other firefighters. I feel honored that these heroes call me "friend." I've always called these men heroes. Posted by TI Anne at 8:02 AM | link | Comment

I wondered what happened to Wil Wheaton's site yesterday. Seems he was "Slashdotted" and his site got some heavy traffic because of it. It's not that I'm necessarily a Wil Wheaton fan (although I did like "Stand by Me" and "Toy Soldiers"), but I think it's cool that he works on his site by himself and keeps a regular journal. It's a very entertaining site and I do enjoy his sense of humor, as well as hearing about his auditions, callbacks and other inside stuff. Posted by TI Anne at 9:08 AM | link | Comment

CNN.com - Giuliani 'humbled' by knighthood - October 15, 2001 I first read about this earlier in the day but I wasn't sure if it was true. There's a lot of junk being posted on the 'net these days and I didn't want to waste my time posting about a rumor. Anyway, I think it's really cool and I believe Guiliani is most deserving.
