The Unknown Artist Production House brochure site and online portfolio, 1995

The company owner and I decided to take advantage of "this new thing," the WWW. What would we put there? How would we use it? True B2B internet utility was still two or three years in the future, so we settled on a brochure type site. Modems were slow and computers were still scary to most of our clients, so the guiding principles were: make it fast! make it friendly! We had a reputation as being somewhat irreverent and playful, and above all always meeting our deadlines. What was the best way to re-inforce these perceptions?

The opening page

I started with large, fast loading, friendly buttons and simple, straightforward messages. With obvious links such as "Go look at our portfolio" and so forth, I reinforced the high-tech/high-touch message.

Company officers and background

I chose to humanize the medium with funky headshots, all converted to greyscale and loading very fast, of the key people at Unknown Artist. Each of us wrote short bios to bring the point home that we're both cutting edge and people-oriented. Contact info as well as company philosophy were included in this section.

The portfolio

As "artists," clients often asked to see our canvas- so I obliged. A spiral binding juxtaposed with the soft canvas created an object both never seen before and yet familiar. A handful of samples illustrated our capabilities. From fleet graphics to tradeshow displays, we showcased projects from most of the high-profile clients in our area, including Toyota, Nissan, South Coast Plaza, Budget Blinds and Display Works.
