Hi all,
We had a wonderful 10 days in Alaska But our time was so short, I felt like I was with Cecilia trying to keep up her pace(ha-ha). The daylight hours were difficult to adjust to being so long that my schedule was competely messed up. The smoke haze from Anchorage wild fires slowly drifted through was bad by the time we left Denali on Thursday, we had a good view of the mountains McKinley range on our way to the park on Tues morning. Wed. the smoke started but the shuttle was nice and saw all the animals we were supposed to see, grizzly sow with cubs, Dahl sheep, and moose and elk, it was a little sad to see a wolf go sauntering by with a large movement collar around his neck. We camped at Denali State Park at Byer's Llake which was nice, and saw a several swans glide by at dusk. We had breakfast at the Talkeetna roadhouse, what a riot. Pat fished the Suistina River for several hours before getting back to Anchorage late in the evening and leaving the next morning for the Kenai Peninsula. We had 2 nights in Homer at the Shorebird Lodge with my nephew and his family,. We had a wonderful view of glacier's', hardobor seals and lots of shorebirds, plus a wonderful garden. Pat and Adam, (his nephew) did a fly-out fishing trip. On Monday we went on a Glacier fly-out, kayaking Grenwick glacier lake and a short hike. We camped later that evening on the Cook Inlet @ Ninilchik with a wonderful view of the volcanoes somewhat obscured by the smoke. Pat fished the ocean confluence for a few hours the next day. Then we headed down the highway to Russian River campground, where I'd hoped to hike to the falls, but was forewarned not to hike alone. We ran into a wonderful park ranger who gave him a few tips on fishing the confluence of the Kenai and Russian River. By noon we headed to Seward, but because of the smoke haze opted not to do a cruise and went to the Sea Life Center. On our return we stopped at Portage Glacier, and did a short level hike, but we didn't get back to Anchorage until 10:30PM. Got up the next morning and got cultured at the Native Heritage museum and the Art Museum. We definitely had a good time and even though we extended our trip a day and a half, we still ran out time to take in such an enormous amount of territory.
What a wonderful way to spend our 25th anniversary. It was made special by Adam and Vitorria's Alaskan hospitality. Get back with you all soon,
Sara and Pat
