Giant by Edna Ferber. A movie, starring Rock Hudson, James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor, was one of Ceil Gray's favorites.
The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway, which was later made into a movie with Spencer Tracy
The Silver Chalice by Thomas B. Costain, based on the story of Simon Magus, who wanted to buy the Holy Spirit from Saint Peter. And the creation of a chalice to hold the holy grail. Paul Newman didn't like the movie, but it was popular with Catholic grade-school kids.
East of Eden by John Steinbeck. Also made into a movie, the second of three starring James Dean.
Samuel Becket's play, Waiting for Godot was published.
Charles Evans Hughes a biography published by Merlo J. Pusey won the Pulitzer Prize.
Reinhold Niebuhr's philosophy, Christ in Culture, and the Revised Standard Version of the Bible (prepared by 32 scholars over 15 years), were also published.

10: Bob Gray, went to Halletsville, Texas, for an interview, and was hired by Judge Lester Holt of Columbus, to be court reporter for the 25th judicial district. This district included the four counties of Guadalupe at Sequine, Colorado at Columbus, Lavaca at Halletsville, and Gonzales at Gonzales.
Cecilia Gray, entered the 5th grade, and Bobby
Gray, 3rd grade, at Saint Michael's School in Weimar, Texas. They met Gloria Hluchanek who lived nearby and they walked home from school together. Mrs. Hluchanek asked Bobby in for a trerat of Cookies and Milk. Bob Gray had rented a house from Tom and Mary Rodgers, on South Saint Andrews Street. Mr. Rogers had to move out of town on business. Bobby got impetigo from the sandbox and had to see the doctor and put on salves.

24: I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus was the popular song. Thge Bob Gray Family celebrated Christmas Eve at the home of Glen and Marian Claussen. Marian (Neiman) was Ceil (Nieman)'s sister. Since she just had a baby, Dale, Glen asked the East Saint Louis Journal photographer to come to the house and take lots of pictures. Maryann Claussen (1935-) announced that she had eloped and married Ken Halbrook. They had their photo taken also.
