The Country Bus
original story by Ibuse Masuji
A man took a ride on a very old country bus during World War II

The bus broke down going up a hill.

The driver told everyone to get out and push.

Everyone got out except for two young people: a man and a woman.

The driver was furious and shouted at them.

They still refused to push so the driver hit the young man.

The b?us wouldn't start even by running it downhill.

The passengers had to push it for four miles.

There are many symbols in this story.

The bus is a symbol of Japan, the four miles a symbol of World War II.

The bus is a symbol of the military, the passengers the Japanese people, and the young man and woman were the protesters.
