PRECIOUS RELICS

Welcome to your one-stop-shop for all your pop culture memorabilia needs...

About This Page

This website was created for an undergraduate course on web site design and was intended to serve as a web site for my "uncle's" company. I chose to make my "uncle's" company one that was connected to pop culture and associated memorabilia, as those things are of interest to me, and created sub-pages to reflect the sense of community I would hope to find with a business like this one. Having the variety of sub-pages that I do on this sample site allowed me to play with a multitude of different elements of html web site design and served to deepen my understanding of both html and css.

Being a page that has an opportunity for message boards and items for sale, I imagined that users of this site in the real world might spend a fair amount of time scrolling through offerings. As such, I wanted to ensure that the color scheme was one that an individual could look at for long periods without causing excessive strain on the eyes. I also wanted it to appear professional, so I tended toward more muted and neutral tones, rather than anything bright or juvenile, for lack of a better word. I made sure to keep the background(s) light and the text dark, to provide as much contrast as possible without being plan black-text-on-white-background. Keeping extended viewing of the user in mind for typography as well, I stuck closer to standard fonts so the reader would not have to decipher letters.

It would be fun to explore what all goes into actually hosting an online market place with items for buy/sell/trade and the database integration that would go into managing that information. I think, if I had more time and forethought, I would have considered having a page or a section of a page for logging in and/or creating user accounts, as I think most of what this site offers would require users to be logged in.
