Paul Harricks, Grade 7 Class of 1966 |
Last night I received the UCC Current Times and read about the upcoming 75th anniversary celebration for Blythwood. I attended from kindergarten to grade 7 when the powers that be decided that we should leave the nurturing comfort of our old school in favour of the wider, but much scarier, world of the newly-built Glenview Senior Public School. No doubt this was a great step forward in the history of public school education in Toronto but it sure didn't feel like it at the time.
For my part, I never really strayed far from Blythwood, at least geographically. In fact, somewhat embarrassingly, I have never lived beyond walking distance of Yonge Street. With three children of my own now, I realize the true value of the education that I received at Blythwood.
I'm looking forward to seeing some old friends and acquaintances on May 4. Alas, some of the teachers who had such an influence on me and so many others (Miss Cressman comes first to mind) won't be with us.
