A WORD ABOUT VIRAL LOAD: (IMPORTANT TO HIV-NEGATIVE BAREBACKERS) The term "Viral Load" refers to the amount of HIV virus active in the body. "Undetectable Viral Load" does NOT mean "HIV-negative". According to the CDC, a person with an undetectable viral load still has the HIV virus and is still considered contageous even though the amount of HIV virus in their bloodstream may fall below the level detectable by modern methods. While drug therapies may help bring a person's viral load down to the level of being undetectable, YOU SHOULD NOT ASSUME that anyone claiming to have an undetectable viral load has been cured of HIV, or that you cannot become infected by them. Current opinion is that HIV infection is a permanent condition and is not curable at this time, and even undetectable levels can still be transmitted from person to person. |
