*(2) Well, it is normal in Japan to take a bath in public "bath house," Let alone Hot spring resort like this. Some argue that Japanese takes bath in public bath house because the price of land is expensive, hence building a bathroom in a house/apartment becomes prohibitive (at least financially). But this kind of public bath house has been around since, well, at least Edo era (feudal era in Japan) - according to my understanding. And, more modern house in Japan now comes equipped with bathroom anyway. So I guess it's just culture thing. Most of the hot spring place still has only public bath though (but it separates men-women, at least).
*(3) Itako = a kind of spiritualist, generally believed to be able to contact with the dead.
