California's Route 260

560. Route 260 is from Route 61 in Alameda to Route 880 in Oakland near Seventh and Harrison Streets. 560.1. Upon the completion of the additional subterranean tube between the Cities of Oakland and Alameda, in the vicinity of Webster Street, to be used in connection with the Posey Tube, both of which tubes are included in the description of Route 260, the department may by executive order, rule or regulation, designate both of said tubes, and the approaches leading to or from the nearest state highway or city street, as one-way highways, and thereafter restrict said tubes and approaches to one-way traffic, proceeding in opposite directions as to each other. Upon the placing of signs notifying the public of such restrictions, any person who willfully fails to observe such sign is guilty of a misdemeanor. 560.2. Because of the statewide interest in navigation, the state will hold and save the United States of America free and harmless from liability for damages to the parallel tubes between the Cities of Oakland and Alameda included in the description of Route 260 due to the initial dredging work and subsequent maintenance dredging in an area within 50 feet of said tubes in connection with the deepening of the Oakland Estuary by the Corps of Engineers of the United States Army and the Director of Finance shall execute an agreement so to do with the proper representatives of the United States of America. Status Signed as Route 61. Understand This description of Route 260 supposedly includes both the Webster and Posey tubes that go under a short river (the Inner Harbor) in Oakland. Each tube already goes in a direction opposite to each other, so this department has already taken care of placing the signs notifying such. Nearby the tubes is the U.S. Naval Air Station. A naval supply center stands next to the tubes. According to Code 560.2, the U.S. government will not be responsible for anything wrong that deals with the tubes. Notes To get to these tubes from Route 980 and the current piece of Route 880 is quite tricky, but it's possible. From Route 980 southbound: 1. Exit on 12th Street and head straight on Brush Ave. 2. Make a left on 5th Street. 3. Past Washington Street, look for an onramp to the left of the street. The enterance sign will just point to the onramp and say "Alameda". 4. On Broadway, get on the ramp that heads down to the left. The ramp will automatically take you to the Webster Tube (and eventually to the real Route 61). From Route 880 northbound: 1. Exit on Broadway. Make a right and head down for one block. 2. Make a right on 7th Street. 3. Make another right on Webster Street. It will take you to the Webster Tube automatically.
