California's Route 190

Route 190 is from Route 99 near Tipton to Route 127 near Death Valley Junction via the vicinity of Porterville, Camp Nelson, Olancha, and Death Valley. [CS&HC Sec. 490]

Status

Unconstructed from the town of Quaking Aspen eastward to Route 395 in Olancha. A route has been adopted.

    Points of Interest

    Lake Success and Bartlett County Park is just a few miles east of Porterville.

    The eastern portion of Route 190 enters Death Valley National Park, home to the lowest point in the western hemisphere (Badwater, -282 feet). Head north from Route 190 on North Highway and you will see the Old Stovepipe Well and Scotty's Castle. Furnace Creek Ranck hosts the Harmony Borax Works, a Borax Museum and a visitors' center, two campsites (Furnace Creek and Sunset Texas Spring), and the scenic Golden Canyon and Zabriskie Point.

    Finally, for a good night's rest, visit this curiosity at the end of Route 190, the Amargosa Opera House and Hotel.

    Truck Routes and Terminal Access

  • Route 99 to 2 miles east of Springville: Terminal Access.
  • 2 miles east of Springville to Quaking Aspen Camp at Western Divide Highway - 2 miles north of Ponderosa: The KPRA advised for this route is less than 30 feet.
  • Route 395 to Route 136: California Legal (40-foot KPRA). Narrow paved shoulders.
  • Route 136 to Panamint Valley Road (Turn-off for Trona/Ridgecrest) - 2.6 miles east of Panamint Springs: The KPRA advised for this route is less than 30 feet. Steep grades, sharp curves. Narrow paved shoulders.
  • Panamint Valley Road (Turn-off for Trona/Ridgecrest) - 2.6 miles east of Panamint Springs to Route 127 - Death Valley Junction: California Legal (40-foot KPRA).

    Notes

    Route 190 enters (but does not exit) Sequoia National Forest. The route has many developed campsites as you approach the end in the town of Quaking Aspen. Its forest headquarters is in Porterville. For more information, call (559)784-1500.
