[CS&HC Sec. 263.6] Points of Interest For a not-so-good time relaxing and fishing, you can spend your time in the Salton Sea State Recreation Area, one of Southern California's most popular boating parks. The Sea is 230 feet below sea level. In 1905, floodwaters of the Colorado River broke an irrigation diversion dam near Yuma. River water flowed freely into the basin for two years. When it was finally cut off, a lake forty-five miles long and twenty miles wide had been formed. Evaporation reduced the Sea to its present size of thirty miles by fifteen miles. When it was formed, the Sea's water was fresh, but, in dissolving the salt flats, it became saline. Fishing for the orangemouth corvina, sargo, and gulf-croaker, which have been planted in the Sea in the 1950s, is prevalent between June and October. Boating and camping are also popular. A marina for the Salton Sea is located at the lake's northern end in Desert Beach. In the vicinity of Palm Springs there's the Oasis Water Park. Notes This route passes by a bunch of cities and desert resorts like, oh:

Officially, Route 111 does not pass by the cities of Cathedral City and Rancho Mirage, since these two cities decided to relinquish Route 111 in their jurisdictions, as suggested above. California State Highways (Pull-down) California State Highways (Tables) The Main Page
