November 2001 Bega - Not Just Great Chese The NSW coastal town of Bega is gearing up for its inaugural Youth Music Festival - BEGA DAY OUT - to be held in January. This festival will showcase not only some great national and international talent, but also the best of the local music scene. From Bateman's Bay in the North to Mallacoota south of the border, young bands are playing and performing with such energy and skill that they're giving their professional counterparts a run for their money. If it's punk, metal, pop or hip hop, then it's happening. Bands like Flush from Mallacoota with Megan Vatcher on drums, and from Eden, Petrol Bombs' Chris Peters also on drums, (both students of the legendary drummer, Ken Vatcher), are proving that these kids know their stuff. Stoned Hollow with Sam Crowden on slap bass and the Bermagui crew, Split Lipp give the crowd something to mosh about. And while Karma's Tal McGowan's beautifully crafted guitar licks shine, and Rory Quirk's fingers fairly fly over the fretboard of his bass, the respective band members keep the professionalism going by producing some really tight and powerful sounds. Rory now play's with John Butler but his band Quirk, with brother Dane on guitar, and Narooma drummer Sam Peterson, is legendary in the Bega Valley. And then there are the singers. Saskia van der Scheur has a unique vocal quality beyond her years. Her voice is beautifully original and fresh. Saskia respresented Bega High School in the Southern Stars production held at the Wollongong Entertainment Centre recently. And Reckless Invention, with Naomi Parker on vocals, has a rock'n'roll history that goes back to ol' Fess from the Radiators, and a sound that proves that you dont have to live in the city to hear great live bands. These young musicians have grown up in communities where music of all kinds is nurtured and encouraged. The Bega Day Out Youth Music Festival will be a melting pot for this music, and an event for all ages, with the emphasis on youth. It's their day. Oh, and there'll also be some other pretty talented bands popping up on the day - like Adelaide's Testeagles, with their electronica metal, the hard working, melodic Stella One Eleven , a solo Diana ah Naid, and a very theatrical and crazy Sick Puppies, still bouncing from their JJJ Unearthed win. And speaking of theatrical, Ross Clelland describes Sydney girl band Bracode as "beautifully trashy..gloriously silly with intent", and "formula punk this is not" says Matt Levey from magazine Sydney Tribe. Bracode will be touring with The Haggard, a wild punk duo from America. They will be a Tour de Force to be reckoned with and the Bega Day Out is on their hit list. So if you want a holiday away from the big smoke, but you want to have your music and see it too, then come to the Bega Day Out, Bega Showground, Saturday January 12th. It will be a day and night to remember. Gates open at 10.00am and close at Midnight. This is strictly and alcohol, drug, and glass free event. Buy an early bird ticket for $20 and be in the running to win a pack of CD's from acts performing on the day. Tickets are available from Magpie Music, Bega, Air Wares, Merimbula, Flipside Music Bar, 2/201 Imlay St, Eden, and Smiths Music, Shop 1 Blandford Centre, Orient St, Batemans Bay.
August 2001 August 31st Bega Day Out - Review Once again the Bega Day Out, held on
the 31st of August at the Bega R.S.L, was a huge success. A total of 6 acts performed
during the night to an estimated 450 people who of which attended the concert and all of
which had a killer night and were also very well behaved. Sam Crowden BDOC band co-ordinator
May 2001 May 11th Bega Day Out - Review Yet again the Bega Day Out has proved to be a huge success with over 350 people from all of the Bega Valley attending the night at the Bega R.S.L on May the 11th. The Sisters Of Havoc kicked of the night with their fine style of DJ technics. They were shortly followed by the extremely insane and deranged comic reliefs Huon and Pratty who incited confusion and laughter amongst the audience all at the same time. After Huon and Pratty, Merimbula Power Punk act Petrol Bomb rocked the stage, to the one hundred or so in the moshpit, with their original songs that had everyone psyching up and jumping around to the extremely quick guitars, and pounding bass drum of Chris Peters. When Petrol Bomb blew up, the extreme Heavy Metal sound of Bega's Stoned Hollow rumbled the auditorium. With the screaming vocals of Ian Hooper and Theon's and Sam's guitars tuned down several notches and the distortion cranked up to a stage so low, that they challenged continential drift. Playing covers such as Deftones "My Own Summer", Coal Chamber's "Loco" and Rage Against The Machine's "Killing in the name" the moshpit of well in excess of 150 people went wild as crowd surfing flourished, but the highlight of the night was when Nathan Hutchinson (former lead singer of Seraphim) and Trent Barber (Bega metalist) joined Stoned Hollow to perform Soulfly's "Bleed" in what was a tribute to Max Cavelera himself. After Stoned Hollow had tripped off, Bega's most prized possession Reckless Invention, led by the powerful vocals of Naomi Parker, hit the stage. Performing covers by Killing Heidi, Nirvana, No Doubt, Blur and Aerosmith's "Walk this way" they proved to be a major favourite amongst the crowd of about 400 people. When Reckless Invention broke down, the evenings final band Karma took the stage. Blending their covers of Sublime, and around eight Rage Against The Machine songs, the Eden boys performed Crazy Town's "Butterfly" which was by far one of the nights most enjoyed songs. Overall the night was a huge success and the next one on August 31st is sure to be even bigger yet. Gratitude to all the acts who performed free of charge, the Bega R.S.L club for their support and the use of the auditorium, Indent and Mumbulla foundation funding, all the volunteers for their help and support, the Bega Day Out Committee and most of all the local crowd for attending the concert and making it possible, I trust that you enjoyed the night and will hopefully attend at the next one. Sam Crowden BDOC band co-ordinator May 11th Bega Day Out The Bega Day Out Committee has been hard at work organising youth music events, since their formation in December last year. The group is intent on building awareness within the community, of the need for youth music opportunities and so far have held 2 successful events, the first being a Bega Day Out concert in January this year, and more recently, Youthstock, as part of Youthweek. The aim of the group is to build up their funds in order to hold a big outdoor music event next January, and to this end they are holding another Bega Day Out concert next Friday, 11th May, at the Bega RSL. This concert will be a fundraiser, with all musicians donating their talents and time free. Again the Bega RSL committee has been very supportive of youth music and have made their auditorium available for the night. Parents can let their children attend, knowing that the club is a safe and well supervised venue, and that the event is drug, alcohol and smoke free. The evening will kick off at 7.30 pm with the wacky DJs, Sisters of Havoc, who will play all the popular dance tunes. They will be followed by the equally wacky, musicians/comedians Huon and Pratty who will also double as MCs for the evening, so anything can, and probably will, happen. In keeping with the Bega Day Out policy of inviting young bands from further afield, Petrol Bomb, from Merimbula, will be representing the south of the valley. This band has been gathering momentum since their formation earlier this year, playing their fast punk style to enthusiastic audiences. Following them will be local band, Reckless Invention, with Naomi Parker out front, singing a variety of the latest hits, as well as some home grown songs. Next up in the evening, with their own brand of moshing music, will be the lads from Stoned Hollow. Theyve been playing around the traps since their formation a year ago, and there may even be a special guest or two, appearing with them on the night. To finish off the evening will be Karma. In between all this the Sisters will have their say, by providing some choice dance CDs, so come prepared for non-stop dancing. Remember, this is a fundraiser for the big one the Bega Day Out Youth Music Festival 2002, to be held next January. So, if you support all ages music events, and want to make next January rock, come along to the Bega RSL, Friday, May 11th and help out the cause, and have a great night at the same time. Entry is only $6. The Bega Day Out Committee acknowledges the support of Indent, The Mumbulla Foundation, and the Bega RSL.

March 2001 Bega Day Receives Funding Recently, the Bega Day Out Committee was informed that they had been successful in two areas of funding. Firstly, the committee has received funding through the NSW Ministry for the Arts, to stage youth music events over the next 12 months. This grant, known as an INDENT Partnership, is 1 of 10 given out statewide, and the only one for the South Coast, Bega winning out over Nowra, Cooma and Queanbeyan. INDENT stands for Independent Entertainment Network for Young people in NSW, and their mission is to develop, facilitate, and support youth entertainment throughout NSW, by providing a range of skill development and training opportunities and funding. The idea of INDENT is that local committees will be created by interested young people and partnered by locally based support organizations. These committees will be supported in identifying local youth entertainment needs including skills, audience development, event planning and management, marketing and promotion, financial and risk management. In Bega the Bega Day Out Committee will be one of 10 Indent Partnerships statewide, and will be supported by the Far South Coast Musicians Club. The second grant the group has received is through the Mumbulla Foundation. This funding is for the production of all ages music events in the Bega Valley, and the group is most grateful to the Foundation for their support. The next Bega Day Out music event is Youthstock, which will be held at the Old Bega Hospital on Saturday April, 7th. This will be a part of Youthweek Activities, and will be in conjunction with Youth Saftey Net, PANTS, and other local organizations. Bega Day Out Music Co-ordinator, Ellie Theodorakis is keen to hear from musicians especially duos, soloists, acoustic, classical as well as poets, comedians and choirs who are interested in performing on the day. Please ring Ellie on 64925677 to register. If you would like to come to the next Bega Day Out meeting ring Sam on 64927318.
January 2001 January Bega Day Out - Review The Bega Day Out Committee, as part of the Far South Coast Musicians Club, wish to thank everyone who made the Bega Day Out Youth Music Festival such a success. Last Saturday, about 300 young people gathered at the Bega RSL to watch, and dance to, 8 young excellant bands and 5 DJ's. From all acounts they had a ball. respecting the rules of the club (thankyou for removing your caps when required, and to all fro remaining silent during the ode), and having fun without incident. Their behaviour was exemplary. Thankyou to our 3 major sponsors .The Bega RSL has supported and encouraged the Bega Day Out Committee from the start, and provided us with an excellent facility for this type of event. Power FM and the Bega District News did a fantastic job covering the event, and we are really grateful. Also many thanks to the wonderful musicians and DJs. Your performances were highly professional and entertaining. The light shows and sound in both the Auditorium and the Hothouse created a great atmosphere, thanks to Darren Russell and his crew from Elite Sound and Lighting, as well as Kush and Magpie Music. This event wouldnt have been as successful had it not been for the many parents, friends, Bega RSL Staff and Security, and members of the BDOC, who supervised throughout the afternoon and evening. Their vigilance assured an incident free evening. Many thanks. The B.D.O.C. wish to thank the following businesses, groups, and people, for their kind support. ABC Radio, Edge FM Community Radio, Womens Resource Centre, Pol OShea/ Turingal Studio, Edwards and Tathra Bus Companies, Bega Betta Electrical. Bega Police, Brooke Small, and all the South Coast Newspapers. The next BDOC event will be during Youthweek 1-8 April, 2001. |
