Like portraits and busts of noblemen, they stand as examples to their race. These victims must surely have been among the most refined of the human population. The bridge from their original state to that ofthe living dead was clearly longer, more painful and more treacherous than most. So disfiguring was their journey that they are now barely recognizable as human.
