Extraordinary Breasts | A Short Pictorial History: Cultural Attitudes Towards Female Breasts |
|
Toplessness Back in Fashion? It would seem that we might be making a round trip in fashion back to Minoan times, when women wore a sort of push up, shelf bra that put their bare breasts out there for all to see. However, it's not clear if further baring of the woman's bosom is a move towards acceptance or continued exploitation. Given the wide-spread acceptance of bare-chested women in Europe and other locations, it is likely that American attitudes will continue to struggle between its Puritan roots and its concept of personal freedom. Paradoxically, it would appear that conservatives could strike a blow at pornography by dropping their objections to the exposure of women's breasts in public. Not that this is likely any time soon. Attitudes among the American public in particular would have to shift a great deal, but it would appear that acceptance of the woman's breasts as an asexual part of her anatomy is gradually increasing in acceptance. Certainly the notion of what one person finds to be erotic is another person's sleep aid. The wide area between what views of a woman's anatomy are merely illustrative vs. deliberately arousing is even traversed by this article. And purposefully so. So that we might think about where our own boundaries exist, and why, and should they. |
