Unit Title:  ___Blast to the Past: Exploring the World of Dinosaurs____ Lesson Number and Title:  _#2_Fossils_

Context

The planet existed even before humans lived on Earth.  In order for students to understand the long life of our planet, we will be exploring the era of the dinosaurs.  In learning about dinosaurs we will touch on some core content standards dealing with fossils, since much of what we know about dinosaurs has been discovered through investigation of fossils.  Students will work with examples of real life fossils and will perform research based on fossils of different dinosaurs.

The students have learned about life cycles of animals with which they are more familiar such as butterflies and frogs.  However, now they will apply the knowledge they have about living things to which they have been exposed to creatures they have never met.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

1.)     Identify different types of fossils and the processes by which they are made.

2.)     Create a video detailing their knowledge of the characteristics of dinosaurs and how humans have uncovered knowledge of dinosaurs.

Connections

Academic Expectations

2.6 Students understand how living and nonliving things change over time and the factors that influence the changes.

Program of Studies

SC-P-BC-S-1

Students will identify and describe evidence of organisms that no longer exist (fossils).

Related Core Content

SC-EP-3.5.1

Students will describe fossils as evidence of organisms that lived long ago, some of which may be similar to others that are alive today.

Procedures

1.)     As in introduction students will watch a Brain Pop video on dinosaurs and complete the online quiz.

2.)     Students will go on virtual field trip and visit different sites to be introduced to the topics of dinosaurs, fossils, and paleontology.

3.)     Then they will have an opportunity to identify and categorize different fossils by what type they are.

4.)     As they identify the fossils they will draw a sketch of each fossil on their paper and describe the process by which the fossil was most likely formed.

5.)     To apply the knowledge they obtain about fossils, students will join with a partner, choose a dinosaur to research, and put together a video on their dinosaur (see rubric).
