Methods
This page lists a series of of methods that have been advanced over the years. Some of these methods have not been specifically advocated in respect of stuttering but have have been either proposed as a solution to the problem of speech disfluency, have been advocated as a means of controlling speech (but not specifically stuttering), or have been chosen by me as a possible method for further investigation.
None of the methods detailed are proposed as a general panacea. My personal view that the treatment of stuttering is a very individualised matter; what might work for one person may not yield the same results for the next person. People may also find parts of a programme or method useful but other parts less useful. For a subject where the etiology is not defined, neither should the treatment be prescribed. It is only through trial and error that a stutterer can find out what works best for them,
Each method is introduced as possible source material for a personal programme to alleviate the problem of stuttering, blocking, and the other covert symptoms. This is not to say that I am discouraging people from joining a specific programme or group. The emotional support, empathy, encouragement and advice one can receive from fellow stutterers can be enormously useful. The discipline or group or programme can also be valuable. Indeed, attending such a group or programme in the first place can be a big step in facing up to your stuttering.
It is arguable that it is can be very difficult to overcome a stutter on your own. However, I also recognise that such resources are not available everywhere; indeed, the programme I went on recently has only been established over the past few years. For those you don't have access to such resources, I hope this site will be of some use (though I would encourage interaction with other stutterers even if only through internet forums).
The remit of this site is evolutionary and iterative, based primarily on my own experience as I try to deal with the problem of stuttering, though I would be very interested to hear of other people's views on the matter. As such, the text and emphases may change over the lifetime of the website. Visitors can check for Recent Updates on the homepage.
