The Simple Past Tense
There is no difference in meaning between the perfect and the simple past tense. The main difference between the two is one of register. The SPT is considered to be more formal (other than with the auxiliaries and modal verbs, and is therefore used more in writing, whereas the perfect tense is used more in speech.
Formation of the SPT
With weak verbs, simply take the stem and add the following endings:
- ich: stem + te
- du: stem + test
- er: stem + te
- wir: stem + ten
- ihr: stem + tet
- sie: stem + ten
Eg: machen:
- ich machte
- du machtest
- er machte
- wir machten
- ihr machtet
- sie machten
Strong verbs have an irregular stem, which must be learned. To this stem we add the following endings:
- ich: stem -
- du: stem + st
- er: stem -
- wir: stem + en
- ihr: stem + t
- sie: stem + en
Eg: trinken:
- ich trank
- du trankst
- er trank
- wir tranken
- ihr trankt
- sie tranken
