Band Links with
SchoolAfter several
weeks of discussions, a link between Barnetby Silver Band and Barnetby
Primary School was finally established on March 12th 1999. The link
enables pupils at the school to use some of the older band instruments.
These became available after the band's recent successful National Lottery
Grant, through the Arts Council of England, which allowed the band to buy
a complete set of new instruments.
The first youngsters to take
up this opportunity are, Hayley Rhodes, Stephanie Leggett, Rebecca Leggett,
Sam Barker and Emily Todd, all learning to play the cornet. Benjamin
George learning to play baritone and Malcolm Speyer on trombone. The
youngsters receive lessons from the peripatetic music support service
provided by North Lincolnshire Council.
When the young players reach
a reasonable standard, they will join the Barnetby Junior Band, at their
rehearsals, on a Monday evening in the bandroom. The link will hopefully
continue as the pupils progress to their secondary school, where they will
be able to continue to use the band instruments and brass lessons will be
available.

Band Scoops National Lottery
GrantBarnetby Silver
Band's members were shouting for joy this week when they heard the news
that the band had been awarded a National Lottery grant of £43,650. The
money will be used to buy a new set of instruments including full
percussion equipment and is the climax to 10 long months of preparing the
bid and five months of eager waiting while it went through the official
channels. The award ,which is supported by the National Lottery through
the Arts Council of England, means that the band, now in its 122nd year,
will be able to enhance its performances - and will also guarantee the
future of its junior band as they will be receiving the old
instruments.
The 33-strong band of senior
band members were delighted with the grant and will be looking forward to
receiving their new instruments in a few months time.
The band, which is totally
self-financing, has had to work hard to get together almost £5,000 which
it needed to guarantee as its contribution to the project. But the
fundraising doesn't stop - money has still to be earned for the everyday
running of the band and the members will be undertaking a busy engagement
diary and taking part in a 'Sponsored Play' around the village of Barnetby
on Sunday, July 19th. They plan to play eight 20-minute concerts at
different locations and hope that this will bring in some more much needed
cash.
Band secretary Karin
Havercroft said: ''We are absolutely delighted with the grant from the
National Lottery and we hope that many people will eventually be able to
share in our success - through our performances and through our training
programme for youngsters." "We would also like to thank Alison Walker of
North Lincolnshire Council and Glynn Foley of Yorkshire and Humberside
Arts for their invaluable help while preparing our bid." "Our thanks also
go to our patrons and all the people who have supported Barnetby Silver
over the years and ensured its continued existence as one of the
friendliest and most popular bands in the area."
