Hitting the high notes in banding | WHO IS WHO |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| BARNETBY JUNIOR BAND was formed just four years ago. At the first rehearsal there were only eight players.
Most of them had never played as part of a group and it was with some apprehension that they started to tackle the very simple pieces. But by the end of the first evening they were playing short tunes and learning that music making together can be great fun. The band has gone from strength to strength - many of the youngsters have encouraged their friends to join the band and many brothers, sisters, mums and dads have been bitten by the brass banding bug and have learned to play. There are now 32 members of the |
Junior Band and the standard of playing has progressed in leaps and bounds.
The band is now playing music which was played by the senior band, just four or five years ago, proving that the standard and ability of the young players is increasing week by week. The band now undertakes several engagements each year and the players have impressed everyone who has heard them. And each year the band tries to arrange an outing where every-one can get together socially as well as musically. We've been to a workshop and played at a concert at the Grimsby Auditorium. We've attended a two-day work-shop at Barton which concluded |
with a concert for parents.
We've been to the Plowright Theatre in Scunthorpe to see the Brighouse and Rastrick band -one of the top brass bands in the country. The band is continuing to go from strength to strength. Two more youngsters Helen Dawson from Barnetby and David Clarke from Stallingborough are already learning and will hope-fully be joining the band in a few months' time. Seven pupils of Barnetby C of E School are now beginning brass lessons through the school's music service - they are Hayley Rhodes, Malcolm Speyer, Stephanie Leggett, Rebecca Leggett, Sam Barker, Emily Todd and Benjamin George. |
is David Havercroft who lives in Barnetby. He is also the musical director of the senior band. Mr Havercroft was a science and maths teacher at comprehensive schools in Scunthorpe before he retired. His interest in music started when he was about 9 years old and was encouraged to play with Barnetby Silver Band by his uncle. He has played many instruments including cornet, tenor horn, baritone, euphonium and even percussion. His daughter Rebecca plays flugel horn with the senior band and his son, who lives in America, is a former Eb bass player. |
