Barnetby Junior Band members undertook a very successful six-day tour of Germany during August, 2004. The group of 49 players and helpers travelled by coach to Dover and then a ferry crossing to Calais before setting off on the long drive to Koblenz. They stayed at a hotel on the outskirts of Koblenz overlooking the Rhine, where they gave an impromptu concert one afternoon in the biergarten. During the trip the band gave three concerts including one at the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz and one in the town of Bad Kreuznach. As well as the concerts the members, whose ages ranged from 11 years to adults, enjoyed a number of sightseeing trips, including visiting the Burg Eltz castle and a cruise along the Rhine. They rounded off the trip with a day-long visit to the Phantasialand theme park, which was enjoyed by young and old alike. The band would like to thank all the individuals and organisations who donated money and goods, and helped make the trip such a memorable one.

After so many people showed their generosity by making donations to the Junior Band trip the young players decided that they wanted to do something to help children and so a concert was arranged to raise funds for the When You Wish Upon A Star charity which makes dreams come true for terminally ill, sick and disadvantaged youngsters. The event was staged in the largest hall in the area, Immingham Civic Centre, and was attended by a huge audience. Sales from tickets and a raffle amounted to £605 and a cheque for this substantial figure was handed over by the band's musical director, David Havercroft, to the charity's representative, Pat Wright during one of the band's rehearsals. Pat said that the money would pay for two children to go on the annual flight from Humberside Airport to Lapland where they are taken to meet Father Christmas.

Barnetby's three bands - Seniors, Juniors and Training - are all busy preparing for the groups' annual Christmas concerts. This year the concerts will be held on Friday, December 17th and Saturday, December 18th in Barnetby Village Hall at 7.30pm The events have become so popular - in fact, they are sell-outs every year - that they have had to be made ticket only. Tickets will be on sale very shortly and people are advised to book early for what is always a great evening of fun and festivity.

Barnetby Silver Band rounded off a fantastic 2001 - their 125th anniversary year - with the news that the band has been invited to play during the Golden Jubilee visit of The Queen to Normanby Hall, near Scunthorpe, in July, 2002. During the past year the band has carried out a busy engagement diary including a special anniversary concert in October at which all three bands - Barnetby Silver, Barnetby Junior and Barnetby Training (making their first public appearance) delighted a sell-out audience. The band's Christmas concerts were all sell-outs and again all three bands took part. The annual presentation of trophies saw 16-year-old bass player John Garbutt winning the David Baker Memorial Trophy for bandsman of the year; while 15-year-old Catherine Sweetman won the George Baker Memorial Trophy for the most improved young player.

The members of Barnetby Junior Band will be breaking new ground in August this year when they undertake the first overseas trip by any Barnetby band. The 44-strong group of players and adult supervisors will be making a five-day tour to Paris and they have been delighted to learn that the band has been accepted to play in Disneyland Paris - quite an achievement as groups from all over Europe are competing for the concert spots. Another of the concerts will be at the Jardin du Luxembourg. As well as playing three concerts the group will be taking in the sights and enjoying all the facilities of their centre outside Paris.

Black Dyke back row cornet player Keith Britcliffe has never forgotten his roots with Barnetby Silver and the band was delighted he was able to be the guest soloist at their 125th anniversary concert. Leading on from this Keith and five other Black Dyke players have undertaken to hold workshops with players from the junior and senior bands. It is hoped that three workshops will be held during the year and all the players are looking forward to a great opportunity to improve their playing.

Helping Hands Award

The Junior Band has been awarded £500 from British Gas, in conjunction with Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph, in their Helping Hands awards. The money will be used to help to pay for additional new uniforms for the 'growing' band of players. Many of the youngsters have outgrown the jumpers which the band wears and new ones have been ordered. The band has also cast aside its traditional black bow ties for bright red ties, embroidered with the Junior Band name, which match the recently-purchased stand banners.

As featured on the front page of the January 6th issue of British Bandsman (No. 5125), conductor David Havercroft has been awarded a Diploma of Honour by The Worshipful Company of Musicians. This is indeed a great honour as there are only five awarded each year in the brass band field. The letter received states, "The Diploma, of which five will be awarded each year, is sponsored by The British Bandsman, and is in recognition of people involved in the brass band scene who have made a significant contribution to the training of young musicians."

Check out edition number 5098 of British Bandsman. Page 2 contains a letter, under the heading "Time for change", written by the band's conductor John Havercroft in response to an article by Alan Morrison (BB 5095) regarding the current debate about contest adjudication.

Also in the same edition (page 7) is an article about Wilfreda Beehive Hatfield Band whose principal cornet player is Tim Pratt who played with Barnetby for most of his youth. Best of luck in the national finals to Tim and the rest of Hatfield Band.
