Basic
Education Curriculum
BEC was conceived in 2002 as mandated in Executive Order No.
46 based on the recommendations of the Philippine Commission
on Educational Reforms created on Dec. 7, 1998 in which
implementing guidelines were found in DepEd Order No. 43, s.
2002 dated Aug. 29, 2002.
The Department of Education adopted this curriculum to
reduce the number of subjects for elementary and high school
from 10 ( Filipino, English, Science, Mathematics, Social
Studies, Home Economics, Physical Education Health, Music)
to just 5 ( Filipino, English, Science, Math and Makabayan)
to allow mastery of basic skills on the part of the students
and make them skilled Filipinos capable of working
creatively in this highly competitive world.
