Listers might remember my posting a request for information on Local
History Societies which covered Peckham. I'm still after that data but,
in the meantime, have received the following from the Southwark Local
Studies Library. I'm posting it just in case it might jog someone's
memory.

Given that Lucy WANMER was a mere 32 inches tall and had suffered the
indignity of having been put on public display because of her size she
must have been a remarkable lady to have run a "successful and strict
school" at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. I believe she is a
relative but, even if she is not, I'd still want to know more about her.

Seasons Greetings to one and all.

Charles

"Dear Charles Henrywood

Thank you for your enquiry concerning Lucy Wanmer

There is information on her in W H Blanch's The parish of Camberwell,
1875. In summary it says she is buried in St Giles's churchyard
(Peckham
was a hamlet of the ancient parish of St Giles, Camberwell); she was
born in
the mid-18th century and lived her youth in Tunbridge Wells; she ran a
school at Peckham which was successful and strict; she attended Grove
Chapel
and was honoured by a funeral sermon there at her death in 1821

I hope this information is of interest

Yours sincerely

Len Reilly
Local Studies Librarian
