Another thing you can do is learn from others. You are not the first one to come face to face with bad news. People who study our behavior have defined neat categories of reactions. That does not mean that you therefore are required to feel every emotion they describe, and in the order they describe them. Some feelings may not occur at all, others may come back time after time.
Still, it may help to know that it is alright, "normal", to feel this way, that it does not make you a despicable weakling. It may help you recognize some feelings, because very often we don't even know what we feel. It may help explain why the whole world is gray some days, and why you find yourself crying in the shower, or blowing up over small things. And it may give you some ammunition to reason some of those feelings away.
