Prior to the invasion, Baghdad was a place of incredible intellectualism; it was where Muslims and non-Muslims from around the world came to study and learn, about everything from religion to medicine. It was a relatively peaceful area...before the invasion. Upon entering Baghdad, one of General Hulagu's first orders was for his men to brutally kill the reigning Muslim religious leader, al-Mustasim, in a public manner that would enrage (and hopefully pacify) the Muslim population...needless to say that* wasn't a very bright move, and it meant that the battle to occupy and pacify the streets of Baghdad would eventually end up causing the death of an estimated 800,000 men...though Hulagu specifically ordered that the Christians living in Baghdad not be harmed. After all, in his own words, he was only there because God hated Muslims. By the time the Muslim Mamluks retaliated and re-entered Baghdad, much of the city had been destroyed; causing untold cultural damage as the jewel of Islam was desacrated by General Hulagu's soldiers. With the continued fighting however it was clear that Baghdad would not be stabilized soon and the Muslims withdrew, meaning they had lost their precarious foothold they had fought to regain in the city. Their remaining hope lay in the fact they'd decided to bring al-Mustasim's uncle to Egypt where he would then amass Muslim troops and try to re-enter Baghdad, a good call since it wasn't long before Baghdad was completely sacked by an overwhelming force again, this time under General Tamerlane (Who was noted for insisting that each of his men had to kill at least two Muslims while there) in a re-taking of Baghdad from the Muslims...this time at a cost of a mere 20,000 Muslim lives. The Muslim counterattack that had been planned in Egypt by the Mamluk leadership combined with al-Mustasim's uncle, never came to be. A sandstorm greatly slowed their progress back to Baghdad and by the time they reached the city they were disheveled, unprepared and quickly cut down by Tamerlane's soldiers, thus ensuring Baghdad's immediate safety. As of yet, the Mamluk insurgents have not returned to Baghdad...but when they do, their retribution will be painful and it will finally prove once and for all why you shouldn't consider an attack on Baghdad to be a simple military operation...and perhaps make some kind of plan before going in!
