The ruins that we see now were built in the Post-Classic period by the tlahuicas who settled the area following the fall of Tula, but whose architecture had been heavily influenced by Teotihuacan. The period of decline began after the region was subjegated and divided by the Aztec alliance; Yautepec being given to Texcoco.

The remains of the archaelogical zone today consist of one main structure which is a massive pyramidical platform. The front stairway is still fairly intact.

At the top of the steps can be found a sunken area divided into a number of rooms by now ruined partitions. Visitors are not allowed to enter the area but it can be seen well from above. Originally there were several painted frescoes to be found, but much has been destroyed. This place, known as the Palace, obviously had many ceremonial functions.
