Now that you know the different types of galaxies, you probably figured out that the sun is in a galaxy. So, what kind of galaxy do we live in? Our galaxy is titled "The Milky Way Galaxy" because, from earth, it looks like a river of milk running through the sky.

The Milky Way Galaxy is a spiral galaxy. We don't know what it looks like exactly, because you need to leave the galaxy in order to see it. Since the galaxy is millions of light years across, we are unable to leave it, let alone get far enough away to photograph it. We get all our knowledge by studying other galaxies, like the Andromeda galaxy.

The sun is not the center of the Galaxy. In fact, the sun is located closer to the edge than it is to the center. The Sun revolves around the center of the galaxy and takes the earth with it, at the approximate speed of a half a million miles per hour. It takes 200 million years to go around the galaxy once! Our galaxy is at least 10 billion years old.
