The Fifty Worlds: DM Information

The Magical Institutes of Atlantis

The Institutes of Atlantis exist to perform research into the noble arts of magic. They take on students, but this is for the benefit of the researchers, not for the benefit of the students. In case you're wondering: (i) research costs money, and students (or more often their parents) pay through the nose; (ii) researchers need educated subordinates with some understanding of the magical arts to perform fairly routine tasks in their laboratories; (iii) lecturing to students actually helps researchers' own understanding of their subject (probably more than it helps the students, if truth be told); (iv) without students, there would be no-one to continue the research when the current researchers retire.

The Institutes of Atlantis are based on large European city universities such as London or Paris; they are most definitely not based on Oxbridge, where the college system is entirely different, or on American universities, where the system is different again.

The members of the Institutes despise the Learned Societies as money-grubbers who prostitute the noble arts of magic. Nevertheless, both Institutes and Learned Societies are an essential part of Atlantean society, and everyone knows this.

[AD&D-specific:] Junior students at the Institutes will generally be either 0th level or 1st-level specialist mages. On reaching 2nd level, many of them will leave to join the appropriate Learned Society as apprentices.

[AD&D-specific:] Senior students at the Institutes will generally be 2nd, 3rd or 4th-level specialist mages. On reaching 5th level, many of them will leave to join the appropriate Learned Society as masters.

[AD&D-specific:] Research assistants at the Institute will generally be 5th, 6th or 7th-level specialist mages. They are supervised by researchers. A few may leave on or before reaching 8th level, but this is unusual.

[AD&D-specific:] Researchers at the Institutes will generally be 8th-level specialist mages or above (sometimes a long way above!). Below 8th-level, there is a good correlation between level and social standing within the Institute. At and above 8th-level, there is little if any correlation between level and social standing: the head of an Institute is not necessarily the most powerful spellcaster, often being more involved with politics or administrative duties.

The heads of the Institutes, known as Wardens, are generally in late middle-age if male, early middle-age if female (although there have been female Wardens for a couple of decades, and are now as many female heads of Institutes as male, having females in positions of power is still a recent development in Atlantis). All are unmarried and childless (wizards with families to support take up commercial work, which pays better than research).

The Wardens will own magical items, but rather fewer than an adventurer of the same level would own. A Warden will typically have a wand of the appropriate type, a magical ring or two, and usually an interesting miscellaneous magical item. Other researchers in the same Institute (the ones who actually travel outside Atlantis to pick up spell components) may have been involved in adventures and may own more magical items. However, most of the Institutes own some very powerful magical items, and the Wardens determine who may use them and when. (I may detail them in due course, but there should not be any need, as no-one in his right mind is going to take on an Institute. Is he?)

Full-time students and researchers at the Institutes must be residents of Atlantis (and deal with all the hassle that entails), so player characters are very unlikely to become full-time students or researchers. All full-time members of an Institute live on the premises.

However, there are also short, in-depth courses on a single topic (a three-day intensive course on charm person, perhaps, or a week-long study of all the ramifications of fireball), suitable for lowish-level player characters who really want a particular spell but couldn't find it on a scroll anywhere or didn't make their "learn spell" roll. Like everything else in Atlantis, these courses are not cheap but they are affordable. The Institutes do not provide accommodation for people attending these courses.

At higher levels, well-known adventuring magicians may also be invited to attend discussions of particularly abstruse spells with the higher-level researchers of an Institute. The Institutes will provide accommodation for such guests.

Most members of the Institutes, staff and students alike, are from an upper middle class (usually prosperous merchant) background. A small proportion of students are from the aristocracy; these rarely on to do research. An equally small proportion of students are from the lower middle and lower classes. These are particularly talented students, paid for by scholarships, and will almost always go on to do research (but hardly ever become head of department).

The Institute of Illusion

I haven't written this up yet.

Very little original research is done at the Institute of Illusion - it is essentially a licensing authority. Anyone wishing to cast illusion spells for commercial purposes in Atlantis must obtain written permission in advance from the Institute of Illusion. Such permission is usually granted, but if anything were to go wrong there would be repercussions, so the Institute is very careful to do things exactly by the book. The book requires a lot of form-filling and other administrivia.

(For other schools of magic, the Learned Societies perform this function, but there is no Learned Society of Illusion. There is a historical reason for this. Originally there was only one Institute of Magic. The Institute of Illusion separated from the Institute of Magic before the formation of the Learned Societies, whereas the remaining Institute of Magic was subdivided into several separate Institutes after the formation of the Learned Societies.)

The Warden of the Institute of Illusion, Kartgav Maglogienatalus, is also Overall Chairman of the Institutes. Maglogienatalus is a skilled illusionist, but his true talent is for bureaucracy. His father was a wealthy self-made merchant, one of the wealthiest in Atlantis, and his sister has married into the aristocracy, but his grandfather was from the poorest class of Atlantis.

[AD&D-Specific] Kartgav Maglogienatalus, human male, born on Delta and educated in Atlantis, Str 12 Dex 16 Con 9 Int 16 Wis 12 Cha 14 Align LE Hp 37. Height 6'0", Weight 167 lb. Another wizard, level 12, illusionist, to follow.

The Institute of Transmutation

I haven't written this up yet.

The Warden of the Institute of Transmutation is Erl Viabinodis. Viabinodis is a poor teacher and not much better at research. He detests the Learned Society of Alteration and Alchemy (it is mutual), and to some extent owes his current position to this hostility - his frequent abrasive comments about the Learned Society were repeated, and that made his name well-enough known to be mentioned when the vacancy arose.

Viabinodis is not a particularly good administrator either. Despite this, the Institute of Transmutation continues to prosper. Transmutation is the most popular field of study in Atlantis - it is the specialism everyone wants to specialise in - and it would take a complete idiot (which Viabinodis is not) to do serious harm to the Institute.

Viabinodis is a natural worrier. He thinks that he might be under a curse and that his nose will enlarge whenever he tells a lie - part of the reason for his abrasiveness is that he tries to be scrupulously honest when stating his opinions. He also often worries unduly about his weight (he is no more overweight than any other typical academic).

Viabinodis comes from a wealthy Atlantis merchant family. One of his sisters has married into the aristocracy (which is perhaps another reason why he was appointed Warden).

[AD&D-Specific] Erl Viabinodis, human male, born on Delta and educated in Atlantis, Str 11 Dex 16 Con 12 Int 12 Wis 13 Cha 8 Align NE Hp 27. Height 5'11", Weight 182 lb. Transmuter, level 14. Ring of Swimming; Ring of Chameleon Power; Wand of Polymorphing; Cloak of the Manta Ray. Viabinodis continues to rise in level, albeit slowly, as he sometimes leaves Atlantis looking for rare materials to use as spell components.

Degelean Josmeelin is the highest-level transmuter in the Institute. His family is even more wealthy than that of Viabinodis, but has no aristocratic connections. Degelean's parents were born into the lower class of Atlantis and made their fortune through adventuring; they now own a castle of their own in the wilderness.

The Institute of Alchemy

I haven't written this up yet.

The Wardeness of the Institute of Alchemy is Rancellie Lacinodis. She is from a well-off upper middle class family in Karianton, who had hoped that she would marry into the aristocracy rather than pursue an academic career.

The Institute of Incantation

I haven't written this up yet.

Incantation is a powerful magical technique, albeit not one of great use to adventurers.

The Warden of the Institute of Incantation is Sosanchey Najetteus. He is a poor administrator, but an excellent researcher. He comes from a well-off upper middle class family in Jantheny.

The Institute of Divination

I haven't written this up yet.

The Wardeness of the Institute of Divination is Natarhinotojeata Tangellisadath. She comes from an exceptionally wealthy merchant family in Jantheny.

The Institute of Words

I haven't written this up yet.

The study of magical words is called Incantation, and has an institute of its own. There is also an "Institute of Words", which studies etymology and linguistics. The other institutes do not regard it as a proper Institute, the Head of the Institute of Words does not have the title of Warden, and the members are regarded as sages rather than wizards.

The current Head of the Institute of Words is not listed (he's not all that interesting).

If the player characters ever go to the Institute of Words, the person they're likely to meet is Talaialam Alie. Talaialam is a sound academic, whose research into linguistics is respected, but her main interest is pornography. She has been known to accompany adventuring parties in the hope of finding pornographic literature or art. She is also far from averse to putting her discoveries into practice.

Talaialam Alie's alignment is magically-concealed - the only way of determining it is by observing her behaviour.

Talaialam comes from a well-off and respectable middle class family in Atlantis who would be horrified if they knew what she got up to.

[AD&D-Specific] Talaialam Alie, human female, born on Delta and educated in Atlantis, Str 11 Dex 15 Con 12 Int 14 Wis 16 Cha 12 Align NE Hp 37. Height 6'0", Weight 144 lb. Diviner, level 12. Wand of Size Alteration; Ring of Warmth; Ring of Fire Resistance; Rope of Entanglement; Iron Bands of Bilarro; Pearl of Power (3rd level spell). Talaialam continues to rise in level, and does so more rapidly than the typical academic.

The Institute of Words collated the first ever Dictionary of the Atlantean Tongue (published by Wswfirn and Sons of Atlantis, price 5 crowns, available in all good bookshops). This estimable tome was sponsored by Dius Retashaza. Talaialam Alie has met Retashaza, has an unrequited lust for him, and would do almost anything he asked of her, if only he would.

The Institute of Cabbalism

I haven't written this up yet.

Cabbalism is an up-and-coming specialisation. Essentially, one translates everything into numbers, manipulates the numbers, and translates things back, rather than attempting to manipulate reality directly.

Until recently, Cabbalism was simply the study of numbers, and was regarded as a non-magical discipline, like Words. Things have changed in the last few years.

The Warden of the Institute of Cabbalism is Teannathmiveh Karialzitsald. He comes from a wealthy Atlantis merchant background.

Karialzitsald has recently demonstrated the power of Cabbalism by making himself wiser.

[AD&D-Specific] Teannathmiveh Karialzitsald, human male, born on Delta and educated in Atlantis, Str 12 Dex 12 Con 11 Int 11 Wis 17 (was 16) Cha 12 Align NE Hp 31. Height 5'9", Weight 164 lb. Diviner, level 14. Wand of Enemy Detection; +1 Ring of Protection; Ring of Blinking; Crystal Ball (with ESP); Gem of Seeing. Karialzitsald continues to rise in level, albeit slowly.

The Institute of Invocation

I haven't written this up yet.

The Wardeness of the Institute of Invocation, Ennisse Tezet, is a nasty person. Ultimately, it is the Institutes who enforce the laws of Atlantis, and in extreme circumstances this means Ennisse's fireballs and lightning bolts, and she is far from reluctant to use them. Ennisse is badly-scarred - in the past, she has been known to cast fireballs before working out the exact volume through which the fireball will spread.

Ennisse came from a middle class background in Atlantis. Her family, although not especially wealthy, were able to afford to pay for her education at the Institute of Invocation, and frequently reminded her that they had done so.

[AD&D-Specific] Ennisse Tezet, human female, born on Delta and educated in Atlantis, Str 10 Dex 10 Con 16 Int 14 Wis 16 Cha 12 Align LE Hp 59. Height 5'9", Weight 151 lb. Invoker, level 17.

Ennisse owns one of the two semi-artefact Wands of Invocation. It combines the powers of a wand of fire and a wand of illumination, and may have a few minor additional powers.

Ennisse also owns, inter alia, a wand of lightning and a helm of brilliance.

Ennisse continues to rise in level, and does so more quickly than the typical academic as she is the wizard most often asked for assistance by the Atlantean police.

Rimumbia Preshesse is the second highest-level invoker in the Institute (her brother Akshan is one level higher, a fact which annoys her, particularly since she is much the more intelligent of the two). She comes from Karianton, from a prosperous lower middle class background. She cannot be harmed by non-magical weapons. He is not especially bright but a diligent research worker with an encyclopaedic knowledge of low-level invocation spells. He detests Unibazulh Rizuwowat of the Institute of Abjuration.

[AD&D-Specific] Akshan Preshesse, human male, Str 5 Dex 16 Con 16 Int 14 Wis 16 Cha 15 Align LN Hp 67 Invoker, level 19.

Adzumma, an amazon invoker, was a pupil of Ennisse Tezet.

The Institute of Necromancy

I haven't written this up yet.

The Institute of Necromancy does not have a high reputation. Most necromancers are out-and-out villains and want nothing to do with Atlantis or its Institutes.

The Warden of the Institute of Necromancy, Jacori Iselerance, is also Chairman of the Purchasing Subcommittee of the Institutes. He is more of an accountant than a wizard, and is not even a specialist necromancer. He is elderly and senile, and not as intelligent as he once was. He comes from a prosperous and well travelled upper middle class background; his father was from Atlantis but his mother was from Agvhazar.

[AD&D-Specific] Jacori Iselerance, human male, born on Delta and educated in Atlantis, Str 15 Dex 7 Con 8 Int 8 Wis 10 Cha 10 Align LE Hp 20. Height 6'1", Weight 169 lb. Mage, level 9. Xanzvaltria Paretizoya is the highest-level magician in any Institute, and frequently mentions this fact. She comes from the very lowest class of Atlantean society (she was raised to be a prostitute at the Temple of Kaieak the Navigator after her parents sold her to raise the money to drink themselves to death) and was awarded a scholarship to study at the Institute of Necromancy in view of her exceptional magical talent.

[AD&D-Specific] Xanzvaltria Paretizoya, human female, Str 11 Dex 15 Con 16 Int 18 Wis 16 Cha 13 Align LE Hp 69 Necromancer, level 20.

Everyone detests Xanzvaltria, and it's mutual. They have to put up with her, because all the other powerful necromancers the Institute has trained have left to become out-and-out villains elsewhere in the Fifty Worlds. Thanks to her temple upbringing, Xanzvaltria has a strong lawful streak and has remained in Atlantis.

The other reason they have to put up with her is that she is the only person in the Institutes, and the only listed NPC on the entire world of Delta, who can cast Wish.

The Institute of Astrology

I haven't written this up yet.

The Wardeness of the Institute of Astrology is Anderia, a priestess. Since the primary duty of a Warden is administration, not research, there is no reason why priests cannot be Wardens. She comes from a very wealthy merchant family in Suhewab.

"Anderia" is a pseudonym - her true name is Mia Jamildo. Priests of Anderia's religion commonly use pseudonyms rather than their true names.

Anderia, human female, born on Delta and educated in Atlantis, Str 7 Dex 4 Con 11 Int 12 Wis 14 Cha 11 Align NE Hp 55. Height 5'9", Weight 134 lb. Priestess, level 15. Anderia continues to rise in level, albeit slowly, as most of her time is spent on administrative duties.

Nympha, an amazon shadow mage, was a pupil of Anderia.

The Institute of Abjuration

I haven't written this up yet.

The Warden of the Institute of Abjuration is Edsuden Firn. He comes from Karianton, from a prosperous upper middle class background.

I don't know a lot about this Institute - Abjuration has a deserved reputation for dullness, and people don't often go there.

[AD&D-Specific] Edsuden Firn, human male, born on Delta and educated in Atlantis, Str 13 Dex 8 Con 9 Int 15 Wis 16 Cha 8 Align LG Hp 32. Height 5'11", Weight 169 lb. Abjurer, level 14. Unibazulh Rizuwowat, the highest level abjurer in the Institute, is thought to be the most boring person in Atlantis. He comes from a wealthy Atlantis merchant family. He detests Akshan Preshesse of the Institute of Invocation.

The Institute of Diabolism

I haven't written this up yet.

The Warden of the Institute of Diabolism is Jamolejzeb Alostahar. He comes from a wealthy Atlantis merchant family.

I'm not sure what Diabolism is, or why its Warden is an illusionist rather than (say) a conjuror. Maybe the entire discipline is phoney. If anyone goes there, make something up. My planned answer was that the overall head of the Institutes, Maglogienatalus (an illusionist), found jobs for his cronies.

[AD&D-Specific] Jamolejzeb Alostahar, human male, born on Delta and educated in Atlantis, Str 10 Dex 17 Con 5 Int 11 Wis 16 Cha 9 Align LN Hp 32. Height 6'1", Weight 145 lb. Illusionist, level 16. Wand of Illumination; Mirror of Life Trapping; Ring of Mammal Control; Ring of Feather Falling; Robe of Useful Items; Scarab of Enraging Enemies. Alostahar continues to rise in level, albeit very slowly, as his poor health does not allow him to go adventuring. He believes, incorrectly, that his poor health is the result of a diabolical curse. It is actually a natural consequence of his unhealthy lifestyle.

The Institute of Conjuration

I haven't written this up yet.

The Wardeness of the Institute of Conjuration is Rallexia Lahape. She comes from a wealthy Atlantis merchant family, but one of her grandmothers was a prostitute at the Temple of Poseidon.

Some time in the past, Rallexia wished to be incredibly beautiful, and her wish was granted as phrased. No-one could possibly believe that her beauty is natural. She looks rather like a living doll: her movements are precise, almost robotic, and her face, although extremely beautiful, is completely expressionless. Her voice is pleasant-sounding but her way of speaking is flat and monotonous.

Some people speculate that Rallexia is an android, but they are wrong. She is human, and feels human emotions just as strongly as anyone else. She just has no way to express them.

Rallexia goes adventuring more often than an administrator ought to, but is nevertheless both an active researcher and an able administrator, and the Institute of Conjuration has prospered under her administration.

Rallexia is a member of the Teleport Society.

The Wardeness of the Institute of Sorcery is Edsuderia Veherand. She comes from Karianton, from a prosperous middle class background.

I don't know a lot about the Institute of Sorcery.

Edsuderia continues to rise in level, albeit slowly as her health is not good enough to allow her to participate in adventures.

One of the researchers at the Institute of Sorcery is distinctly unhappy with Edsuderia and aims to replace her as Warden. Mitsdes Deglieb, a merman who is immune to Edsuderia's Ring of Human Influence, encounters little race prejudice outside the Institute (his fish-tail is not necessarily a serious disability in Atlantis), but Edsuderia does not approve of merman wizards.

The Psychic Institute

I haven't written this up yet.

The Psychic Institute is a relatively recent addition to the Institutes. It has been squeezed into buildings which used to belong to the Institutes of Sorcery and Divination, neither of which is happy about this development.

The Warden of the Psychic Institute is Andeb Calideb. He was born on the banks of Many Demons River (his northern accent is still audible) and comes from a prosperous upper middle class background.

Player characters attending short courses designed to help psionic wild talents control their powers are unlikely to meet Calideb, whose administrative duties leave him no time for teaching. Instead, they are likely to meet one or both of Minaz Dispeklas, who specialises in psychic combat, and Tompazumizte Jored, who teaches a number of devotions including pheromone control (which is the latest fad in Atlantis).

The Wardeness of the Institute of Thaumaturgy is Jamovaroulia Maattevinathyeri. She comes from one of the wealthiest merchant families in Atlantis.

For reasons I've never bothered to determine, Jamovaroulia does not need to breathe. Maybe it's something to do with her thaumaturgical researches, or maybe the explanation is something else. If the Atlantean Institutes ever go back to their moon, Jamovaroulia is certain to be one of those who goes.

The Wardeness of the Institute of Enchantment is Genesse Stapo. She comes from Atlantis, from an upper middle class family whose income dried up but who continued to live their old lifestyle, beyond their current means.

If you are looking for a dominatrix (and there are many in Atlantis who are), Genesse will be happy to oblige.

Genesse is the youngest of the Wardens, not yet having reached middle age. She is a pupil of the previous Warden of the Institute, Bzaran the Genocide.
