New: The New York Sun gave us a truly nice write-up, thank you very much.

“Asked what distinguishes East Village artists, Mr. DeGennaro, who is also a writer, said a common characteristic is that they ‘do more than one thing.’ Ms. Van Cook added, ‘They are interdisciplinary and consciously so.’”—The Knickerbocker (Aug. 19, 2005; subscription required to read entire article.)

Stephen Lack

“Lack picks images from the circus of signs that is media culture and tweaks them into haunted, contemporary icons -- suburban houses, sports cars, industrial silos, ocean liners, rowboats on the shore.”—artnet

Marcus
Leatherdale

Boat Wallah Pearls Banaras

“A contemporary perspective of timeless, traditional India as seen through portraiture. These exhibitions illustrate Leatherdale’s exploration and profound interest in the diversity of the Indian People. His camera lens cuts through India's caste system, shooting Maharaja to Harijan/ untouchable.

“Leatherdale lived, part time in Banaras, India for 6 years. Dwelling in one of the oldest cities in the world, he was fascinated by how unaffected India's people were by the passage of time. This work is not meant to be an overall study of contemporary India. It is a personal vision... Marcus’ India. ”—from his site.

Gibby Haynes

Gibby Hayness paintings fuse a saturated color reminiscent of George Grosz and Ed Pashke with the chaotic raw id of his iconoclastic imagination. Haynes was the frontman for the legendary art-rock band The Butthole Surfers. He has a critically acclaimed album in shops with his new band Gibby Haynes and His Problem.

Crash

CRASH (John Matos), using the subways as his launching pad, established a link between the “underground” and “aboveground.” His belief that art is the common bridge for communication, is his primary motivation. And graffiti is the quickest and most honest form of communication. Crash paintings are in collections ranging from New Orleans Museum of Art, New Gronninger Museum, Holland, the Ludwig Museum, Kassel, and the Museum of Modern Art, NY to private collections worldwide.

Thom Corn

Thom Corn is an artist, actor, and drummer whose work has been exhibited in New York City since 1981, when his one-person exhibition The Fear of Man was shown at the seminal South Bronx Gallery, Fashion Moda. In 1985, Thom organized the first Democracy at Work group exhibition, a responsive alternative to the dearth of cultural and gender inclusiveness in the New York gallery scene of the time, which featured the work of over 100 artists at 22 Wooster Gallery. Versions of Democracy at Work were subsequently mounted at the Longwood Arts Gallery in the Bronx (sponsored by the Bronx Council on the Arts) and at the Max Fish Gallery in the original Planet Ludlow. ... more.

Oscar A. Alzate

“In the tradition of Edward Kienholz and Leon Golub’s politically charged work, my sculptural installations deal with the worldwide affects of the Drug War. As a Colombian-born artist, my installations are concerned with the social issues triggered by this epidemic. In working with the aesthetics of addiction, violence and carnage, my work has evolved to a more inclusive and accessible language, and presently engages more universal topics. My installations focus on the significance of tangible content, the essence of quality artistry, and the creative process of merging them.”

Giovanni Galella

A turbulent menagerie of whimsy and debauchery would be a perfect description of both Giovanni Galella and his work. Born in 1975, Giovannis colorful background has seeped into his art. From Jacksonville Florida to New Jersey to Indiana, and now New York, he has explored all fields of expression and his appreciation for each form is what makes his work unique. He has worked as a body piercer, a tattoo artist, a tattoo flash designer, and a magician. He has written creatively for many literary magazines, owned a private company crafting exotic wood jewelry, played in bands, and now works for a design and pre-press agency.

Karan Mitchell

Karan Mitchell The Ascension 2001 Acrylic on Canvas

“Although I am employed as a NYC Bus Operator, my life is filled with much more than bus routes and maps. I am a graduate of Traphagan School of Fashion. I've also attended NYU school of Continuing Education (Business Administration), Young Film-Makers, Bard College's Humanities (Art History, Philosophy, Literature and Thinking/Writing) and Urban Glass. My work (art) is a product of my surroundings, observations and imagination. I am very serious about my work, although, it may seem funny at times, there is an underlying message.”
