Frederick Gordon Brownell

Frederick Gordon (Fred) Brownell, KCLJ, served as State Herald of South Africa from 1982 to 2002 and was then elected chairman of the HSSA, an office he holds to this day.

In all he served 19¾ years as State Herald, continuing in office after his official retirement date of July 2000. His career, together with those of his predecessors, is mentioned in an Arma editorial here.

His arms were registered by the Bureau of Heraldry on 16 January 1981, when he was still Assistant State Herald. The blazon reads:

 

Arms: Ermine, a chevron Azure cottised Gules and a chief gably of three Azure.

Torse and mantling: Argent and Azure.

Crest: Issuant from a crest-coronet of four fleurs-de-lis Or, a demi-springbok proper charged on the shoulder with an escallop Argent.

Motto: Arma Parata Fero.
