Spoilers: "Heat Wave", for Roswell.
"Millenium" for The X-Files.
Author's Notes: I wrote this before seeing the Roswell episode
"Heat Wave." But I did have prior knowledge of some
event ( eg: Max and Liz's kiss). So some things are consistant
with that ep and some things aren't ( eg: Michael and Maria
didn't break up in mine). So that's that.
Just My Luck-Part One
She was clearing a table when he walked in. He was wearing
that gray t-shirt, the one that made his arms look amazing, and
his hair was slightly ruffled, probably from riding the jeep with
the top down.
He locked eyes with her and flashed a rare but charming grin. In
return, she gave him a shy smile while he sat down at the booth
in the front.
She turned her face away from him. She wondered if he could tell
that she was thinking about it, that it was all she could think
about ever since.
When she looked back, she found him staring straight at her with
those intense eyes. Was he thinking about it too? Well,
she thought, only one way to find out.
She quickly put the dishes in the kitchen and then walked over to
the booth, trying to appear cool, even if she was wearing antenna
on her head.
"Hey," he said, greeting her with a smile, "Whats
up?"
"Nothing," she said while trying not to stare directly
at him.
There was just something about his eyes, his soulful brown eyes,
that made her forget where she was, what she was thinking, what
she was doing...
"Liz?"
"What?" she said. "Oh, sorry. I guess I'm a little
out of it. So, what can I get you?"
"Um nothing. Actually, I was wondering," he started to
say as he ran a nervous hand through his hair. "I was
wondering, well, when you get off-- Well, ya see, there's
this--" he looked away and choked out a nervous laugh.
"Max," Liz started as she slid into the booth.
"Yeah?" he asked hesitantly, looking back at her.
"Are you trying to ask me out?" She couldn't help but
smile.
"Well, when you put it that way... Yeah, I am." He
smiled too.
"Well, then," she said, trying not to show how excited
she was, "I accept."
"Great," he exclaimed.
Then, realizing how ecstatic he sounded, he added softly,
"Pick you up at seven?"
"Sure," she said, while getting up from the booth.
"Great." He stood up and turned to leave.
"Max?"
"Yeah?"
"I can't wait."
He smiled and walked out. And under his breath Max said,
"Neither can I."
"Roswell? Again?" she asked as she plopped down on
the couch. "Don't people get tired of hearing about this
place? 'Cause I know I'm sick of going there."
He didn't respond. He was packing quickly. Their plane left in
just an hour.
"Mulder, aren't you going to tell me why we're headed to
Roswell, New Mexico at four-thirty in the morning?"
"All in good time, Scully. All in good time."
She noticed that he hadn't looked her in the eyes ever since she
had arrived. Was it because of what happened? Was he sorry? Or
was she just over-analyzing the situation because of her lack of
sleep? Scully didn't know.
She did know, however, that she didn't regret it. Not one moment
of it. She had been thinking about it, she admitted that much to
herself. But, of course, she couldn't admit that, in between work
and those normal everyday thoughts, it was all she was thinking
about. It had been unexpected, but at the same time it felt so
natural...
"Scully?"
She looked up at him and found him looking her in the eye for the
first time in the last half hour. His hazel eyes were bright,
even at this ungodly hour. She nodded, implying that she was
listening.
"Coming?" he asked.
She nodded again and grabbed her bag, following him out his
apartment door.
"I liked it." Liz said, "It was just the part
with the woman being possessed by that thing that got to
me."
"Got to you?" Max asked with a mocking grin on his face
as they walked down the street towards the Crashdown.
"Okay," Liz admitted, "so it freaked me out a
little."
"A little?"
"Yeah."
"You screamed," he reminded her.
"Okay, I'm a wuss, all right? Is that what you want to
hear?"
He grinned. "Yes."
She smiled and gave him a playful shove.
"Actually, " he started, "you're not a wuss."
Liz gave him a sideways glance, not sure if he was joking or not.
"I'm not?"
"No, you're one of the bravest people I know."
She smiled as they continued down the sidewalk. Finally, they
reached the cafe.
"Well, this is my stop," she said softly.
"Yeah. I had a great time, Liz."
"Me too," she said smiling, "It was nice to do
something--"
"Normal," he broke in. He looked disappointed.
She took his hands in hers. "No, it was nice to do something
with YOU."
He smiled and squeezed her hand. "Can I walk you to your
door?"
"Sure."
They turned into the alley that led to her back door, their hands
still joined. He was looking over at her in the half light. She
was so beautiful, so sweet, so wonderful. He wondered how he had
gotten so lucky. He eyes met his and he stopped just before the
steps.
"Max?"
He was remembering the kiss. The way it had felt, how soft her
lips were, how good it felt to hold her in his arms.
"Max? Are you okay?"
He looked at her, she was so concerned, always looking out for
him. And he knew that he was truly falling for her.
"Liz. What about that-- that kiss?"
She smiled and blushed slightly. "Yeah?"
"It was just... Well..."
"Max?"
"Yeah?"
"You don't have to be afraid of me, I don't bite."
He grinned, "I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad
thing."
"You're horrible," she said with a giggle.
He held her hands in front of him, like a bridge between them.
"Seriously, " he started, "About that, I just
never... Never did that with anyone before, and I just wanted to
make sure nothing... weird happened during it."
"Weird?" she asked smiling, trying not to think about
how it had been his first kiss.
"Well, since I can connect with people, I just wanted to
make sure you were okay with that, just in case."
"Well, nothing weird happened last time. But, as any good
scientist knows, you have to test a theory over... and over...
and over again before you come up with a definite result."
He chuckled. "Really?"
"Yeah," she said breathlessly.
He pulled her close to him and cupped her face in his hands. She
moved her arms around his neck as his head moved in closer. She
shut her eyes.
"Liz Parker?"
They broke apart, looking guilty. A man and a woman stood in
front of the alley, shining a flashlight on her and Max. Liz
inched foward slightly. "Um, yes? I'm Liz."
"Agents Mulder and Scully, " the man said.
"FBI."
Max and Liz looked at each other with horror in their eyes.
