Spoilers: "Heat Wave", for Roswell.
"Millenium" for The X-Files.
Author's Notes: I wrote this before seeing the Roswell episode
"Heat Wave." But I did have prior knowledge of some
event ( eg: Max and Liz's kiss). So some things are consistant
with that ep and some things aren't ( eg: Michael and Maria
didn't break up in mine). So that's that.
Just My Luck (Part Two)
Maria awoke to the sound of a light tapping on her window.
Figuring it was nothing, she rolled over, desperately trying to
go back to sleep.
Suddenly the tapping became an insistant knocking, and Maria sat
up in bed with a gasp.
She looked over at the window. And when her brain figured out who
it was arousing her from a peaceful sleep, she gave a small
groan. She tumbled out of bed and reluctantly opened the window.
"What are you doing here?" she asked in a groggy voice.
Michael stared at her for a moment. She looked like a tired
little girl, with her ruffled hair. But at the same time there
was nothing little about her, he realized, as his gaze wandered
to where her night shirt ended, just about mid thigh.
"What?" she asked impatiently, "What are you
staring at?"
His face fell, "Well, it'd be wonderful if you'd invite me
in for a moment, so I can tell you what's going on."
"Well, excuse me," she said while stepping aside, and
inviting him in. "I don't really let strange guys into my
house at two thirty in the morning."
"Really?" he said while stepping inside. "That's
not what I've heard."
She plopped down on the bed, "You know what? It'd be really
great if you could just tell me why you're here, interrupting my
sleep, without insulting me."
"Fine."
"Fine."
He looked around at her room, noticing the alien paraphernalia
that was scattered in certain places. He knew by now not to ask
about it, she would just say "My mother makes them!"
"So," she said seriously, "What's going on? Is it
Liz? Is she--"
"Would you calm down? Someone's gonna hear you."
"No one's gonna hear me, because no one's here. My mom went
to a convention up north."
"And she left YOU alone?"
"Story of my life... Now would you please tell me what's
going on?"
"Well, it looks like the FBI has decided that the covert
strategy wasn't the way to go after all."
"What do you mean?"
"They're here in Roswell, and they're not being secretive at
all. They went to see Liz tonight. Her and Max were on a date and
he was walking her--"
"Whoa, whoa! " Maria exclaimed. "Back up! Max and
Liz went on a date!? And she didn't tell me? What is the world
coming to? That girl is going to have some explaining to do, I
mean--"
"Would you shut up? First of all, that isn't even the point!
And second of all, I can't believe that he'd be so stupid as to
actually--"
"Actually what?" she asked defensively. " Get
involved with a human? Ohhh, how horrible. Well, buddy, let me
just tell you, you're no better than him, so don't preach."
"You and I aren't involved," he said angrily.
"Did I say that?" she retorted, while standing up to
face him. "No, we're not involved. You just like to use me
whenever you get the chance!"
He took a step closer to her. "I didn't hear you
complaining."
She moved closer. "I didn't get the chance, what with your
hover of a mouth all over me."
"You know, I don't even know why I came here," he said,
turning to go.
"Neither do I! I was just trying to get some beauty sleep
when you barged in."
He turned back to her. "Well, get back to your 'beauty
sleep', you need it."
She stepped closer, "You are such a bastard!"
"And you're such a princess!"
"Arggggh! I really hate you!"
"Same here! I'm leaving," he said, but he did not turn
to go.
"Fine! Leave!"
"Fine , I will!"
"Good! "
Then he kissed her, hard. His hands were around her waist, and
hers flew up to play with the hair at the base of his neck.
He had to admit that for someone who was such a nag, he did enjoy
kissing her. And he didn't know it, but Maria felt the same way,
even if he was a jerk.
They kissed for what seemed like forever, and then they finally
broke apart, looking at each other awkwardly.
"So," Maria said, "What was it you wanted to tell
me?"
He had been waiting by the phone for what seemed like forever.
Him and Isabel, just sitting in his room, nervously awaiting her
phone call.
Finally, it rang. Max picked it up quickly, so his parents
wouldn't be awakened.
"Liz?" he said into the reciever.
"Yeah, " she said breathlessly, "it's me."
Isabel moved in to hear what was being said.
"What happened?" he asked.
"Well, nothing really. They asked me if I could speak with
them tomorrow morning. And I said I could. And then they asked
where my parents were, and if they could also speak with them.
But my parents went to that convention with Maria's mom, they
won't be back until next week."
"Well, maybe it's better that way. Then they can't get
freaked out because the FBI is asking their daughter
questions."
"Maybe," she said with a sigh. "Max, I'm scared.
What if you guys are in real danger this time? I mean, they
aren't even being secretive about it. They just showed up. What
if--"
"Liz, it's okay. We'll figure it out in the morning. You
should get some sleep."
"Yeah, okay." She paused. "All things aside, I
just wanted to tell you... I had a nice time tonight."
Max grimaced. Liz didn't know Isabel was listening, and when she
heard what Liz had just said, she gave Max a look that would have
killed a lesser being.
"Max?" Liz said on the other end, wondering if he had
hung up.
"Me too, Liz. Good night."
"Good night," she said with a smile that Max could feel
through the telephone line. Then he hung up.
Isabel stood up and started to pace, meaning that she was really
upset now.
"So," she started, "Michael was telling me the
truth. You actually went out on a date with her?"
"Why is this such a big deal!? I mean, you go out on dates
all the time! God forbid I go out on one in my entire life."
He was annoyed now. No one seemed to care that the FBI was on
their tails again. No, all they they seemed to care about was his
relationship with Liz.
Isabel sat down next to her brother again.
"This isn't the same, Max. None of my dates know I come from
another planet. Liz knows your secret, our secret. I mean, did
you ever think about what would happen if your little fling went
sour? Who knows what she would do, or say, if you guys ever broke
up!"
"First of all, it was one date. And second of all, Liz is
not like that and you know it."
He got up and walked towards the window.
"Max, I'm sorry. Liz is a good person, I know that. But it's
just all so dangerous, especially now with the FBI here. I mean,
these people aren't stupid. What are they gonna think when they
find out that you and Liz Parker were nothing more to each other
than lab partners before that day in the Crashdown? And then
there's Kyle, I mean he knows--"
"He doesn't know anything. He just suspects. But you're
right. We have to think of something to tell these people when
they come around."
"Okay," Scully started patiently, "Explain this
to me one more time."
He paced around the hotel room, chewing on sunflower seeds. He
was in his "groove", as Scully liked to think of it.
Whenever he got excited about one of their cases, he couldn't sit
still. He had to be moving at all times, had to feel like he was
doing something to get closer to the truth.
"Liz Parker," he started. " Your ordinary,
over-achieving, American girl, has been being observed by a team
of FBI agents for the last three months. This was an extremely
covert operation, that not even some of our superiors knew
about."
"So," Scully said while trying to rub the sleep out of
her eyes, "How did you find out about it?"
"From the agent who was formerly assigned to the case,"
he said while handing her a file.
It had a picture of a young blonde woman posing for her FBI ID
photo.
"Agent Topolski," Mulder started. "She was posing
as the school's new guidance counselor, all the while keeping a
close eye on six students in particular."
He handed her more files.
"These students: Liz Parker, Max Evans, Isabelle Evans,
Maria DeLuca , Michael Guerin, and Alex Whitman. They all appear
to be hiding something."
Scully put the files down. "Hiding what, Mulder? I mean,
this Liz Parker, we scared that poor girl half to death. To me it
looked like she was just saying good night to her
boyfriend."
"Her 'boyfriend', as you put it, happens to be Max
Evans."
"So?"
"So, three months ago Liz Parker was shot in the stomach
while waitressing at her parents' cafe. But she never received
any medical treatment for the wound, and if you were to examine
her it would look like she had never been shot at all."
"Mulder, what do you mean, exactly?"
"I mean, that seems odd, considering that this was the
uniform she was wearing that day."
He handed Scully the teal uniform, and when she unwrapped it, she
saw the hole in the side and the blood stains surrounding it.
"So you think..." Scully started.
"I think that Max Evans did something to her that day. I
think that Max Evans is anything but your normal high school
student."
