Chapter 4 - Awakening Evil

Disclaimer: I still dont own Yu-Gi-Oh

Big hug for Aqua who helped me a lot with this chapter!

Suggestions and ideas for the story are always welcome. Information about the characters too. Does anyone know the exact age of Seto (in the Battle City arc)? Ive seen him on school with Yugi and his friends in the first episode, but he looks a lot older than them. And I find it hard to imagine someone running a company and going to school as a teenager.

Japanese glossary

Ee = yes (informal)

~ Yami no Tenshi ~

~ Last time on Yu-Gi-Oh (^_~) ~

His yami didnt answer immediately. Instead he made a large, circular motion with his hand in front of Gabrielle. He glanced at the girl.

 What?!

Gabrielles eyes followed Yamis every movement. A bit embarrassed by the spirits reaction, her facial expression grew annoyed and she looked away.

Yugi blinked in confusion and turned to make sure there was nobody else standing there, except Yami.

There wasnt

/ Er Yami? \ he started hesitantly.

Yami turned to face his hikari.

// Theres no way \\ he began.

/// She can see you/ me?! \\\ they exclaimed at the exact same time.

~ Chapter 4: Awakening Evil ~

The screen of a laptop suddenly turned black and the Kaiba Corp logo sort of less danced across the screen, now and then bouncing against the borders. The sudden change of the screen in from of him pulled Seto out of his thoughts, and the pen in his hand hed mindlessly been toying with fell on the wooden desk.

Hmm? was his first reaction, his mind still clouded.

What! Damn! he exclaimed when he fully understood the situation and almost jumped up from his chair.

Hed been daydreaming for the past fifteen minutes.

Seto heard the door of his office open and turned about.

Is everything alright? Mokuba asked, standing in the doorway, his hand still on the doorknob.

Yeah his older brother answered, Nothing to worry about.

 Are you sure?

He nodded assuringly. Mokuba smiled relieved and shut the door again, his footsteps still audible for a little while as he made his way down the hall.

Seto sighed and sat in his chair for a moment, before he hit the mouse with his right hand. The screen turned back to normal, revealing a lot of statistics and other information about Kaiba Corp. He tried to pick up his work where hed left off, but it didnt take long before his attention was pulled back to his inner world of thoughts.

He simply couldnt figure out how a schoolgirl around his age with limited computer-knowledge could bypass his security systems up till a certain level, that is. And why she did it was another question. What good could classified information possibly be to her? Kanto-san had mentioned something about her getting the computer stuck several times. Had she tried to break into his system before?

Maybe she wasnt as innocent as she looked. A spy from another company, perhaps, hired to sabotage his.

Seto shook his head and growled. This wasnt getting anywhere. Acting paranoid and inventing all sorts of theories about someone, wasnt like him at all.

He stood up and closed the laptop with a bit of a thud. If he wanted to get to the bottom of this, then there was only one thing he could do: ask her personally.

 Er Gabrielle? Yugi started carefully.

Yeah? she answered without looking at him, her voice was almost like a whisper.

Who are you looking at? he asked, hoping for a different answer than he feared shed give, namely: Yami.

I dont know, but please dont tell me hes a ghost, cause Ill faint. she replied hesitantly, her voice still soft.

Standing face to face with supposedly dead people, wasnt a thing she did every day. And it obviously scared the hell out of her.

 Hes not. Yugi reassured her.

 Im a spirit. Yami added.

Ah-ha. she muttered, her face turning pale and all the sudden her body went limb.

Yugi jumped up frightened, when Gabrielle unconsciously fell backward, trying to catch her before shed hit the floor. Yami beat him to it, that is if he had a body. He gasped in shock as he saw Gabrielles body fall straight through his arms, remembering his current state. Being a spirit in the world of the living was a thing he couldnt get used to. His reflexes were still the same as they had been three-thousand* years ago.

Luckily, Yugi made it just in time and they both sighed in relieve.

/ Did you have to say that? \ Yugi growled at his yami, when hed recovered from the shock and laid Gabrielle down on the couch.

Before Yami could respond, Sugoroku entered the room. He looked at Gabrielle with utter concern and glanced at his grandson questioningly.

 What happened? he quickly asked.

 She suddenly fainted. Yugi replied.

He felt a bit uncomfortable for not being able to tell his grandfather why Gabrielle had fainted, but this was not the right time to tell him about the spirit in the puzzle.

Wed better lay her on a bed until she regains consciousness. Sugoroku suggested, while checking her pulse.

How? Yugi asked, truly wondering, since their bedrooms were upstairs and Gabrielle was twice their size.

Hmm his grandfather mumbled as he thought about it, Youve got a point. Maybe its best to leave her on the couch and keep an eye on her.

Yugi nodded in agreement.

// Its quite amazing, dont you think, \\ Yami said as Sugoroku left the room to get some blankets, // that she was able to predict exactly how shed react. \\

/ Ee. \ his hikari responded, / But to pass out like that She must be really afraid of ghosts and things like that. \

Yami nodded.

/ I think its mainly the fault of society, though. Books and movies keep telling us to be afraid of the supernatural. \

// Thats too bad. \\ Yami said. // If they were properly introduced to it, they would know theres so much less to fear than they think. \\

/ And they could start worrying about the real threats. \

Suddenly a soft groan drew their attention. Gabrielle was coming around.

She wrinkled the skin on her forehead and cautiously cracked on eye open. As she opened her other eye and noticed the anxious faces of Yami and Yugi, she slowly mumbled: Pharaoh?

Their eyes widened in shock. What was that? Pharaoh?

Suddenly Gabrielle clutched her head and squeezed her eyes shut in agony. She tossed her head to the sides as if she was being tormented by a terrible headache.

It was not until the symbol that characterized all of the Millenium Items, appeared on her forehead, before Yami pulled his hikari away.

// I dont know what exactly is going on here, Yugi, \\ he said, // but Ive got a bad feeling about this! \\

/ I agree, \ Yugi said as he watched Gabrielle relax again and the Millennium Symbol disappeared from her forehead, / this is reminding me a lot of Keith, when he was under Mariks control. \

// Marik? \\ Yami asked, // Do you think shes a Rarehunter? \\

For a moment the little boy was silent. He stared at the girl with a sad look in his eyes, obviously wishing that it wasnt true.

/ Anything is possible \ he finally answered.

Kaiba had reached his destination, in the suburbs. He looked up at the building in front of him. It wasnt very large compared to the other buildings in the city. It was just a small block of flats, three stories high. There couldnt be more than twenty-three apartments in it.

He pushed the door of the entrance open and walked through. On the other side, he found himself in a rather large room with large plants in pots and seven doors, equally spread over the four walls surrounding him.

According to the data he had on Benu, she lived on number eight in building. He looked around, reading the numbers next to the doors. She had to live upstairs, since these ended at five.

With his characteristic, calm strides he approached the wooden staircase, the ends of his long trench coat floating behind him and a metal briefcase in his right hand, and walked up. The steps creaked under his feet, but they seemed strong, nevertheless.

When he stopped at the end of the stairway and looked around, he noticed a little boy standing downstairs, hiding behind a large plant. The boy glanced up through the banisters at Seto, but remained standing on the same place. He decided to ignore the boy and continued his search.

Number eight, where was number eight? There! In the corner of the building.

He approached the door, but stopped when he heard footsteps behind him. He turned his head a bit. The little boy had followed him up the stairs and was now glancing at Seto from behind the banister. The boy had noticed that Kaiba was looking at him and startled, he spoke: If you came to sell her something, youre wasting your time!

Kaiba blinked and looked at him with surprise. Who was this kid?

I didnt come to sell anything. he said.

Youre still wasting your time, the boy responded, Shes not at home.

Oh? And would you happen to know when she comes back?

The boy shook his head with determination.

Damn. Kaiba growled inward and bit his lip, Have I come all this way for this?

He looked at the shut door one last time before he turned around and made his way out the building. The sparkling, brown eyes of the little boy followed his every move, until he disappeared through the front door.

Half an hour later the same door opened again, but this time Gabrielle stepped through, followed by Yugi. When Gabrielle wanted to go home with directions given by Sugoroku he had decided to come with her, in case she might collapse, because she wasnt fully recovered. The weird thing was that she couldnt remember anything about Yami or the fact that she called him pharaoh, as if her mind had banished it from her consciousness. Or maybe Marik had erased it

Just a moment after she entered the building she noticed a small boy with jumpy, short, black hair which was dyed red in some places sitting at the end of the staircase.

 Hey Gabrielle. he called cheerfully.

She growled in annoyance.

 Who is that? Yugi asked.

Shinta. she whispered, The only good thing about him, I know so far, is that he keeps away salesmen.

He looked at her in surprise.

One time he wanted me to buy something, but I refused. And now he keeps away other salesmen. He thinks I mind. she continued and grinned.

Someone came looking for you. Shinta said.

 Oh. Gabrielle responded.

A salesman. he added proudly and stood up, He said he wasnt, but couldnt fool me. He was holding a briefcase.

Really?

Shinta nodded enthusiast.

 What was he selling?

Ehm he mumbled thoughtfully, I dont know.

 Did he give his name?

He shook his head. No, but I could easily point him out in a crowd. He was tall and wore a long, white trench coat that seemed to float behind him. Sort of like your coat, but far worse. And he had short, brown hair and really blue eyes.

 Kaiba? Yugi thought wonderingly.

Really? Gabrielle laughed, I didnt knew Kaiba Corp went bankrupt over the weekend, condemning Kaiba Seto to a job as salesman!

Shinta laughed. That wasnt Kaiba Seto. Youre just pretending not to care that I keep sending away the salesmen. But you cant fool me!

Gabrielle shook her head and sighed.

I guess Ill be heading back home now. Yugi said and pulled the door open.

Okay. And thank you for everything. she answered.

No problem. he responded as he waved goodbye, already standing a few meters away from her.

Gabrielle stood by the door and watched him go for a moment, before she shut the door and made her way up the stairs. Shinta was still standing proudly at the end of it.

Youre right, kid. Cant fool you! she said and patted him on the head as she walked by, Get a life.

The young boy growled and tried to get his hair back in shape as he followed Gabrielle with his eyes. Gabrielle threw him a patronizing smile before she shut the door.

*5000 in the dub. I still dont understand why they changed that I mean, its not like Egypt didnt exist 3000 years ago. With 3000 youd come in one of the periods in between, when Egypt was torn apart by wars and who knows what else That would fit in better, wouldnt it?

Hope to see you next time. ^_^
