Who's who?
Eleanor Culas. She is originally from Johore, Malaysia. Graduated in May
17, 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work. She is married
to a hearing American man and has two hearing daughters. Presently she
is staying in Maryland, USA.
Lam Heng Beng. He is originally from Malaysia. Graduated in May 21, 1979
with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Arts. He is now married to a deaf American
woman and has two hearing sons. Presently he is staying and working in
Maryland, USA.
Teh Poh Gaik. She was born in Penang, Malaysia. Since her
admission into Gallaudet University in 1978, more Deaf Malaysians followed
her footsteps. We thought she was the first person to be admitted into
the university before learning about the earlier graduates. Graduated
in May 17, 1982 with Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and later in May
23, 1986 with a Master of Arts degree in Secondary Education. She is working
as a Math teacher at high school for the deaf in Fermont, California.
Her words: "Education isn't play and it can't be made
to look like play. It's hard, hard work, but it can be made interesting
work."
Tan Cheng Peng. He is originally from Kedah, Malaysia. Graduated in May 17, 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and May 23, 1986 with a Master of Arts degree in Education Technology at Gallaudet University. Later, he continued studies and graduated at Catholic University, Washington, DC with another Master of Arts degree in Mathematics. Presently he is staying and working as a Math teacher at the deaf college in Texas. He's now married to a deaf Thailand girl.
Choo Peck Voon. She is originally from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Admitted into Gallaudet University in 1978. Extended her graduation to more two years due to her work. Graduated in May,1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. She is now married to a deaf Korean guy and has a daughter. Presently she is staying in Maryland and working as a research technician at Gallaudet University, Washington DC, USA.
Donald Maklin Monjohi. He is from Sabah, Malaysia. Graduated in May
21, 1984, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics. Presently he is working
as a network engineer at Computer Service Department in Sabah.
Shanmugan Pillai. He is originally from Perak, Malaysia.
Graduated in May 23, 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary
Education and History, and May 13, 1989 with a Master of Arts degree in
Secondary Education and History at Gallaudet University. Presently he
is staying and working as a teacher at deaf school in Alexandria, Virgina,
USA.
Sally Lee-Kerns. She is originally from Melaka, Malaysia. Graduated in December, 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. Married to a hearing American man and has a daughter . Presently she is working at the Senator office.
Susie Wee-Bishara. She is originally from Sarawak, Malaysia. Graduated
in May 13, 1994, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Arts. She
is now married to a Deaf Korean American guy and has two cute kids -
a boy and a girl. Presently she is staying and working in Los Angeles,
California.
Eu May-Lin. She is originally from Penang, Malaysia. Graduated in May
13, 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and also
graduated in May, 1996 obtaining a Master of Arts degree in Deaf Education.
Presently she is working as a teacher in Massachusetts and now married
to a deaf American, Michael Balint. Recently, they have a new son.
Ho Koon Wei. She is from Johore, Malaysia. She graduated
from Gallaudet University with a Bachelor of Art degree in three majors:
Mathemathics, Computer Science and Deaf Studies on May 16, 1997. She just
graduated with a MA degree in Linguistic on May 12, 2000. She,initially,
worked as a program executive at YMCA Self-Reliance Centre for the deaf,
Kuala Lumpur. She has now been promoted as an executive at Majudiri Y
Foundation for the deaf.
Her words: "High motivation comes along with strong will."
She returned home from USA on February 7,1998 after 4 years of staying. It was sad that she had to bury her goal of teaching because of some specific reasons. What she does nowadays is to create Deaf awareness among Hearing people in Malaysia and to serve the Deaf community better. Currently she is working as ICT Coordinator for YMCA Kuala Lumpur.
Keep your dream but never be too optimistic, that's her philosophy in life.
Aqlam Jafri. He is from Selangor, Malaysia. He graduated in May 14,
1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems.
He returned home to Malaysia at the end of July'99. He is presently working
as a system engineer at Mimos, Kuala Lumpur.
What's more, he is now the President for Kuala Lumpur Society of the Deaf.
(2004-2006). He is married to MFD hearing interpreter with and they have
a son.
Wang Wan Kim. She is from Johore, Malaysia. She graduated from Gallaudet
University with BA degree in Computer Science on 12 May 2000. She's now
working as an IT system assistant in Penang.
Zaine Bujal. He is from Sabah, Malaysia. He was enrolled into Gallaudet
Unversity in Spring 1998. In 2003, he graduated with a BA degree in Computer
Graphic. Back to his homeland - Sabah, Malaysia, he did temporary jobs.
He is currently working as a computer graphic artist at Malaysian Federation
of the deaf(MFD).
