Alright then! After a pause that lasted an eternity, we are finally back to complete what was proving to be an intriguing series of Test Cricket last year. The Test series between England and India last year came to an halt with Covid scares surrounding India's camp. Although none of India's players tested positive, the scare was enough to stop the series midway.
The fans were waiting eagerly for the series to resume and their wishes are finally materializing. This last remaining match of the series is important for multiple reasons and both sides would want to get a win here. While a draw would be sufficient for India to lift the trophy, they would want to register a win here, keeping the World Test Championship in mind. England, on the other hand, would need to win the match to level the series.
The 5th and the final match of the England vs India series that started in 2021 is all set to be played at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham. The match will be played from 1st July and as was the case in the last series, a cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards here.
After a disappointing last summer, something had to give in English Cricket. They brought about some radical changes not only with respect to the team combinations but also with respect to the support staff. The Coach-Captain pair of Chris Silverwood and Joe Root has now been replaced by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. The results up until now have just been brilliant and England would want to keep it that way.
This is certainly not the England that lost two matches in the series that is continuing from 2021. Only four players that played in that series will be featuring in this one and there's a lot more changes than just the change in personnel. As seen in their performance against the Kiwis, this England side will come hard and mean business. They have changed massively over the last month and at a frantic pace.
England are coming into this match on the back of a 3-0 triumph against New Zealand, the World Champions. Even though the series was fought well and New Zealand had their chances, England always looked in front. The likes of Jonny Bairstow, Ollie Pope, and Joe Root were just brilliant right through the series. Their bowlers did exceptionally well with Matty Potts surprising one and all with his skills and abilities.
All in all, this is a remarkable turnaround that England have scripted and they would want that to continue. India are arguably just as skilled as the Kiwis but offer an altogether different sort of a challenge. It would be interesting to see the strategy that England adopts, but it is certainly going to be exciting. If England are able to pull off the performances similar to what they did against the Kiwis, they will be well in business.

Even though it all appears pretty much the same on-paper for India, a lot has changed for them. In 2021, the team was being led by Virat Kohli with coach Ravi Shastri and that pair is now replaced with Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid. Much to India's concerns though, Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19 and a decision regarding his availability will be taken only a day before the match.
Another reason for India to be concerned would be the absence of KL Rahul, who is the second-highest scorer in the series up until now. While Agarwal has been called in as replacement, he is likely to just warm the benches. Considering the performances in the only warm-up match that India played, we will see Shubhman Gill or Srikar Bharat or both open for India. Regardless, it is going to be a difficult task at hand to face an equipped new-ball bowling attack that England boasts of.
With Cheteshwar Pujara's participation uncertain as well, India's top-order looks relatively new. Having said that, Pujara scored heaps of runs in the County Championship, albeit against Division-2 teams, and India would not want his recent experience in English conditions go waste. It is the middle-order that India will want to come good. The likes of Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, and Hanuma Vihari are as good as any. Kohli and Pant looked good in the warm-up game too and that should boost their confidence. India might decide to look at Shreyas Iyer as well, given how well he did in India, but that however, is unlikely.
On the bowling front, India not only have a settled attack, they also have an attack that can work regardless of the conditions. The likes of Mohammad Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammad Siraj complement each other beautifully. It would be interesting to see who the fourth bowler would be. Considering the ability with the bat he offers, Shardul Thakur is certainly ahead in the pecking order.
India were brilliant in the last series and it is difficult to imagine them continuing from where they left. As seen in the warm-up game as well, batting would be their primary concern. They do have the ability on paper but adapting to the conditions would be the key. They have just been here for a few days, played just four days of cricket, and will need to be on their toes to get settled right from the word go in this upcoming match. Besides, they were coming off a long IPL season and getting right back into the Test match rhythm is not easy. If India can adapt not only to the conditions but also the format, they will certainly be a very difficult side to beat.

We have seen captains favoring chasing in the shortest format of the game but this is different. The surfaces can change massively over the course of five days and impact the result in a big manner. England have still preferred to chase recently and will want to do that again. India, on the other hand, might want to bat first. Having said that, it will depend on how overhead conditions are on the match day. Considering that it is expected to be overcast on the first couple of days, we expect the captain to win the toss to field first.

It is expected to be overcast in Birmingham in parts on the first couple of days and the ball will move around. Having said that, the first couple of days would be the ones when the batting would be at the easiest. Birmingham's surface will have something for everyone over the course of five days and it should put up an interesting contest. As has always been the case here, the quicker bowlers will have a bigger role to play as compared to the spinners, at least on the first three days. Considering all that and combinations of the two sides, the team batting first should be happy with anything over 360 runs on the board in the first innings.

While both sides will be pretty confident of themselves coming into this match, this will be the real litmus test for both the sides. India are up in the series and would want to continue to maintain their supremacy. England, on the other hand, will be brimming with confidence following their immaculate win over New Zealand in back to back Tests. India are a strong team and will certainly give a tough fight and it could be anyone's game. However, considering the above stated factors, England are certainly firm favorites to win this one. Bet on England to win the 5th Test of the series between England and India.
Virat Kohli may not have scored a hundred from ages, but he hasn't been in poor form at all - it's just the standards that he has set. He scored runs in South Africa and is coming off a decent fifty against Leicestershire in the warm-up fixture. He is India's best bet to counter England's probing bowling and enjoys pressure. Considering what is at stake and Kohli's ability to do well in high-pressure moments, a bet on Virat Kohli to be India's best batsmen in the match seems to be a pretty lucrative option.
England have changed massively compared to the last four matches of the series and most would acknowledge that. However, something that hasn't changed is Joe Root's knack of scoring runs and scoring big. He is coming off a terrific series against the Kiwis and will be hungry for more. A bet on Joe Root to score at least a fifty in the first innings should be the way to go. Those looking to take the riskier route may well bet on him scoring a hundred too, which is another good option.
