Sexuality, Magic, and Politics in Tibetan Buddhism

With her book, Traveller in Space: In Search of Female Identity in Tibetan Buddhism,
the Scottish philosopher of religion, June Campbell, opened the floodgates for
an honest and sound debate about Tantric Buddhism.
She worked as a translator for Tibetan lamas, including Kalu
Rinpoche, whose "secret sexual consort" she
became. Here we reproduce an article about her from the Independent.

I was
a Tantric sex slave
For
years June Campbell was the`consort`of a senior
Tibetan Buddhist monk. She was threatened with death if she broke her vow of
secrecy. But then enlightenment can be like that.
Feet of clay? No, it was a different part of the anatomy - and of all too fleshly substance - which caused the trouble. But, I suppose, you don`t expect Tantric sex to be a straightforward activity. Then again, sex of any kind isn`t really what you`re planning when you become a celibate nun.
It was, said June Campbell as she
began her lecture, only the second time she had been asked to give a talk to a
Buddhist group in this country since her book. Traveller in Space
came out three years ago. Small wonder. The topic of her talk was "Dissent
in Spiritual Communities", and you don`t get
much more potent types of dissent than hers. For she not only revealed that she
had for years been the secret sexual consort of one of the most holy monks in
Tibetan Buddhism - the tulku (re-incarnated lama), Kalu Rinpoche. She also insisted
that the abuse of power at the heart of the
relationship exposed a flaw at the very heart of Tibetan Buddhism.
This was heresy , indeed. To outsiders, the Rinpoche was
one of the most revered yogi-lamas in exile outside
The
inner circles of the world of Tibetan Buddhism - for all ist
spread in fashionable circles in the West - is a closed and tight one.
Her claims, though made in a restrained way in the context of a deeply academic
book subtitled - "In Search of Female Identity in Tibetan Buddhism" -
provoked what she described as a primitive outpouring of rage and fury. "I was reviled as a liar or a demon",
she said during a public lecture last week at the nonsectarian College for
Buddhist Studies in Sharpham,
But it was not fear of the
response which made her wait a full 18 years before publishing her revelations
in a volume entitled Traveller in Space - a translation
of dakini, the rather poetic Tibetan word for a woman
used by a lama for sex. It took her that
long to get over the trauma of the experience. "I
spent 11 years without talking about it and then, when I had decided to write
about it, another seven years researching. I wanted to weave together my
personal experience with a more theoretical understanding of the role of women
in Tibetan society to help me make sense of what had happened to me."
What happened was that , having become a Buddhist in her native

relationship. "It was some years before
I realised that the extent to which I had been taken
advantage of constituted a kind of abuse".
The practice of Tantric sex is more ancient than Buddhism. The idea goes back to the ancient Hindus who believed that the retention of semen during intercourse increased sexual pleasure and made men live longer. The Tibetan Buddhists developed the belief that enlightenment could be accelerated by the decision "to enlist the passions in one`s religious practice, rather than to avoid them". The stategy is considered extremely risky yet so efficacious that it could lead to enligthenment in one lifetime.
Monks
of a lower status confined themselves to visualising an
imaginary sexual relationship during meditation. But, her book sets out,
the "masters" reach a point where they
decide that they can engage in sex without being tainted by it. The instructions in the so-called "secret"
texts spell out the methods which enable the man to control the flow of semen
through yogic breath control and other practices. The idea is to "drive the semen upwards, along the
spine, and into the head". The more semen in a man`s
head, the stronger intellectually and spiritually he is thought to be.
"The
reverse of ordinary sex expresses the relative status of the male and female
within the ritual."
More than that, he is said to gain additional strength from absorbing the woman`s sexual fluids at the same time as withholding his own. This "reverse of ordinary sex", said June Campbell, "expresses the relative status of the male and female within the ritual, for it signals the power flowing from the woman to the man".
The imbalance is underscored by the insistence by such guru-lamas that their sexual consorts must remain secret, allowing the lamas to maintain control over the women. "Since the book was published, I`ve had letters from women all over the world with similar and worse experiences".
So why did she stay for almost
three years? "Personal prestige. The women
believe that they too are special and holy. They are entering sacred space. It
produces good karma for future lives, an is a test of faith". The combination of religion, sex, power and secrecy can
have a potent effect. It creates the Catch 22 of psychological blackmail set
out in the words of another lama, Beru Kyhentze Rinpoche: "If your guru acts in a seemingly unenlightened
manner and you feel it would be hypocritical to think him a Buddha, you should
remember that your own opinions are
unreliable and the apparent faults you see may only be a reflection of your own
deluded state of mind...If your guru acted
in a completely perfect manner he would be
inaccessible and you would be able to relate
to him. It is therefore out of your Guru`s great compassion that he may show apparent flaws...
He ist mirroring your own faults".
The
psychological pressure ist often increased by making
the woman swear vows of secrecy. In addition June Campbell was told that
"madness, trouble or even death" could
follow if she did not keep silent. "I
was told that in a previous life the lama I was involved with had had a
mistress who caused him some trouble, and in order to get rid of her he cast a
spell which caused her illness later resulting in her death.
There are those Buddhists, like
Martine Batchelor - who spent 10 years as a Zen Buddhist nun in a Korean
monastery and who now teaches at Scharpham College -
who insist the religious techniques the Buddha
taught can be separated from the sexist, patriarchal and oppressive culture of
many Buddhist countries. But June Campbell is not convinced. "You
have to ask what is the relationship between belief and how a society structures
itself," she said. In Tibetanism,
power lies in the hands of men who had often been traumatised
by being removed from their mother at the age of two and taken to an all male
monastery. "Some were allowed visits from their mothers and sisters but
always in secrecy - so that they came to associate women with what must be
hidden".
But there is more to it, she
believes than that. Teaching at Sharpham last week
she gave the students a whole range of material about different kind of
feminism - from the political to the psychotherapeutic. She then asked them how
it relates to the fact that there are no female
Buddha images or to why in Tantric sex images the woman always has her back to the
viewer, or to why Buddhist women are told to
pray that they will be reborn into a male body in their next life -for only in a man`s body can
they attain full enlightenment.
"Once
I started unravelling my experiences, I began to
question everything," she said. That meant not just the actions of
a particular guru But the very idea of the guru.
She began to wonder whether the Tantra was just a fantasy, and whether
there is really any difference between Tantric sex
and ordinary sex. She questioned the very concept of enlightenment
itself and the practice of meditiation. "I realised that in order
to be myself I had to leave it all - completely an utterly."

sex actually lost control over themselves…in the heat of passion…tantric sex got reduced to ordinary sex? And to cover up
that IRREVERSIBLE mistake, secrecy is brought in…concerning the sexual partnerº…

risks being defrock (parajika) of the monk as well as
loss of face or humiliation before others including students, disciples, well
wishers etc.

(embarrassing to man BUT common gossip “secrets” among women…and in modern
times of high tech spy devices, wireless spy devices, satellite based zooming
spy devices etc., such intimate matters are also available very precisely as
juicy open “secrets” to perverted man and women voyeurs also…) to be made
public, like, How did he perform in bed? …How much amount of cum/pre-cum the
partner come across during the acts?...How many times he did that?...For how
long the rod was erect?...Did he frequently try hard to bring the rod back to
erection or the woman had to help a lot…in various ways…in bringing about the
erect state?...Was the rod of sufficient length?...How long he can keep on
going?...Does he get tired soon?...Is he “forceful” always?...and so on and
on…a long list of intimate questions regarding sexual activity concerning any
man…
And in
a scenario with multiple partners, comparison of each factor with other men
also comes in…

SO WHAT IS TANTRA?
Tantra is a term used widely in Western society to refer to a developing system of sexual healing and way to improve sexual performance and communication within human relationships.
Tantra
was originally developed as a spiritual practice and became accepted as a shortcut path to Enlightenment. It was adopted
into Hinduism and was taken to
Tantra had nothing to do with sexuality other than tantra is about all aspects of life, It is the sexual terminology used to explain tantra that causes confusion.
To understand Classical Tantra in this context it helps to understand the concept of the archetypes of our characters that were made better known by the psychologist Karl Jung. When we look at Buddhism and Hinduism we see a great many Deities such as Kali, Krishna, Laksmi, Shiva etc. These Deities are the character archetypes that exist within us. They are the prince and princess, king and queen, witch and wizard, the lover and the loved, the dragon and various demons.
Every deity has it's qualities of;
love
strength
compassion
wisdom
The
embodying of these qualities helps you to become more whole and empowered.
Look now briefly at the history of Yoga.
1. Yoga has a history that goes back beyond 6000 years, and one possibility is that it has stemmed out of mankinds interest in himself. To me is probable is that yoga has developed from shamanizim and a basic human desire to undersatand our selves. Shamanisim incorporates many practices to alter both mental and physical states. And it seems that in this quest that an this traditional practise over time has developed into the science of yoga.
2. A rumour
presented by Stuart Wilde and supported by many other teachers suggests that
there was a super race of beings who assisted
mankind in his endevour as a means to 'realise the self' However these beings left or died
and religon developed out of the desire to maintain
the qualities that were presented. However the meaning was lost and religon became more to do with power and control. So there
has always been corruption. It seems that always
when some one in out culture develops and idea, or a creation, others want to
have and to control it.
Within yoga and tantra the body represents the cosmos and all of the Gods, liberation can only be gained by setting out from the body. So it is good to have a body that is healthy and strong. It is said that it is for the need to have this strong body that the physical Hatha Yoga was developed. Were as before yoga practices have been more concerned with meditative states.
The
ultimate quest of yoga is to realise the self, to
know God... To achieve the state of Buddha or Christ consciousness.
The
path of yoga is to search, to know ones inner world, ones body mind and spirit
and to develop ones latent potential.
Tantra:
Within Yoga, tantra became vouge In 6th centuary AD and spread over all sections of society.
According
to Buddist history, Tantra
was introduced by Asanga and Nagajuna who both lived on the border areas of
Tantra is divided into 4 classes, 2 more for ritual and 2 for attaining the supreme truth.
Shiva The Male Principal and Shakti the Female Principal. God is still commonly seen as male, but the association of giving divine status to the Shakti also recognises the godliness of woman. A religious rediscovery of woman? A recognition of all that is remote, trancendant and invulnerable in woman, incorporating the mystery of creation and mystery of being. This has been described that phylosophicaly that the rediscovery of the Goddess is bound with the carnal condition of the Kali Yuga.
A new revalation of timeless truth for this dark age.
Sexuality
in tantra serves as a vehicle for attaining transcedence.

inward journey into the light.
Within Tantra there are two schools of thought;
In
the Buddhist tradition of the Dalai Lama, Tantra is a
meditative vizualization, involving immense detail. This is preceeded by the generation of bodychitta
or right attitude.
The more liberal translation, is that tantra is about sex and a means of improving sexual performence, the bodys energies are stimuated and sexual practices engaged in. This concept is currently in vouge and results in the development of a new awareness of the self, one's partner and approach to love making. Includes are;
Body Consiousness and Sexuality.
Communication.
Kudalini, ida, pingala, shasuma.
Force or Persausion?
Retention of semen.
Restaint of orgasim.
Trancendence
Peeling the layers.
Seeing the divine in each other.

The Tantric Gurus of
Frankly we cannot and must not deny that the Kama Kalpa teaches many Tantric Sadhanas; however, here we only cite the one in which the male is seated in Padmasana (or in the Buddhic style or simply with his legs crossed in the oriental style) and practices the sexual union with his female Yogi.
Thus, the
female Yogi Initiate has to sit on top of the legs of her male Yogi and skillfully
cross her legs in such a way that the trunk of her male Yogi is enveloped by
them.
An interchange of caresses between the man and the woman is previously required in order to perform the sexual connection of the Lingam-Yoni during this Tantric Sadhana, thus the woman finally absorbs the Phallus.
This Tantric
connubial practice demands an absolute quietude and
mental silence in
order to avoid the tenebrous intervention of the Pluralized “I.”
Strong Electromagnetic currents exuberantly flow in those instants of supreme voluptuousness; thus the couple enters into Ecstasy or Samadhi.
A Guru directs this esoteric work; he makes strong magnetic strokes on the Coccyx of both man and woman with the purpose of awakening the Electronic Solar Fire, the Igneous Serpent of our Magical Powers.
This is a system that transmutes
the sexual energy into OJAS (Christic Force). The couple must restrain the
sexual impulse and avoid the Ejaculation of the Semen.
“The Coitus Interruptus,” the restrained sexual impulse, makes the sexual energy of the Third Logos to inwardly and upwardly return throughout the canals of Ida and Pingala.
Maithuna originates within the coccyx, close to the Triveni of the Microcosmic Human Being, an extraordinary contact between the Solar and Lunar Atoms of the Seminal System.
The advent of the fire is the outcome of the contact between the Solar and Lunar Atoms of the Seminal System.
The Gnostic Tantric
Sadhana is very simple. During the Tantric act, man and
woman practice in the normal or ordinary sexual position; what is important is
to withdraw from the sexual act before the
Spasm in order to avoid the Ejaculation of
their Semen.
I. A. O. is the Tantric Mantra of excellence. The letter “I” reminds us of IGNIS, the Fire. The letter “A” is the AQUA, the Water. The letter “O” signifies ORIGUM, the Spirit. I. A. O. must be chanted during the practice of Maithuna.
It is very interesting that the Sexual Gonads are esoterically governed by Uranus, the Planet of Aquarius. Uranus was a Divine King from primeval Atlantis. Uranus reminds us of UR-ANAS, the Primordial Fire and Water. This is equivalent to the establishment of the First Luni-Solar Cult of the Androgynous “IO,” in other words, the apparition of the Astrological Chaldean; therefore, Uranus, the Asura-Maya, the First Atlantean, is factually the first revealer of Sexual Mysteries.
One has to descend into the Ninth Sphere (Sex) in order to work with the primordial Fire and the Water, origin of Worlds, Beasts, Human Beings and Gods. Every authentic White Initiation begins there.
The Advent of the Fire is the
most extraordinary Cosmic Event. The Fire
transforms us radically.

These examples are nothing more than different names for the unlimited number of manifestations of that Mysterious Proteus that has been named the Archaeus of the Greeks.
