- What type of content to competitors use on their websites?
What I find most compelling about the portfolios I browsed was the diversity of content. Creators
used website portfolios to show off artwork, graphic design, website development, house renovations,
and even some coding! Prior to my research, I'd really only seen portfolios used for artwork, so this
showed me the range they can be used for.
- What types of images are used?
Compelling portfolios must include images of their work rather than simply listing their former
place of employment. Many had pictures of their designs and coded them in a way that made them
user-interactable. I could hover my mouse over the image to move it, tilt it, or zoom in.
- What color schemes are used?
Most portfolios used black or white, with their images adding some color. The most impressive one
I viewed had a lot of personality, with their text being written as if it were strings of code. The
code was multicolored and made their page more compelling.
- What layout styles and techniques were used?
Some of the more boring portfolios I saw had an image scroll feature. You would just use an arrow to pan
between different images. The more complling ones implemented design into the way users could scroll up or down
through their site.
- What can I do better?
Personally, I found the pure black or white portfolios to feel really boring. Although they do feel
professional, they also feel boring. A white backround with tall, white text was the most common style
I found used. With so many competetors using this style, it's hard to stand out. I believe there are
ways to use color and stylization to show my personality through the site design.
