PROBABILITY RULES

Addition Rule (The “Or” Rule)

For mutually exclusive events (if and only if one of the events can take place at a time)
P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B)
E.g. What is the probability of getting a 1 or 6 with a throw of a dice?
Solution:
P(1 or 6) =
=

For not mutually exclusive events (it is possible both events to occur together)

P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A and B)

E.g. A card is drawn from a shuffle pack of 52 cards. What is the probability of drawing a Queen or a Diamond?

Solution:

P(Queen or Diamond) =
