In this match on 30th April 1993 (Bad Friday), Monica was stabbed in the back at a changeover by Gnther Parche, who was acting on behalf of Steffi Graf. The tournament and the tour continued as though nothing untoward had happened, and the players voted not to protect Monica's ranking. With Monica out of the game, Graf achieved her goal of regaining the world number one ranking and, to add insult to injury, won the next four Grand Slams. The only legal punishment was a two-year suspended sentence for Parche. Monica did not return to professional tennis until 1995.
