Bettian League of Gridiron

The Bettian League Of Gridiron (BLOG) is a national American Football league contested between teams within Bettia. The league is divided into four conferences (North, South, East and West), with 16 teams battling it out for the AroraBowl.

The teams competing for AroraBowl I were:

North:
Porthbalfa Blazers
Pen-y-Bydd Reapers
Ceffinton Turbos
Huwbridge Swifts
South:
Akani Sands Destroyers
Lorshill Lions
Downton Eagles
Whitchurch Cannons
East:
Grappenhall Grapplers
Spiddaford Spiders
Kirkwood Rangers
Gabalfa Gasheads
West:
Sukatra Sabres
Subarnas Volcanos
Tamrida Warriors
Fiilghud Chargers

Each team plays each other once during the regular season. Each team is awared three points for a win, one point for a draw and nothing for a defeat. In addition, bonus points are awarded for the following: -

  • Scoring four touchdowns in one match - 1 point
  • Scoring six touchdowns - 2 points
  • Shut-outs (i.e. conceding no points in a single match) - 1 point
  • Twenty point margin of victory - 1 point

Therefore, the maximum number of points available for any one match would be eight (three for the win, two for scoring six touchdowns, one for a shut-out and one for winning by more than twenty points).

The eight teams finishing first and second in their groups progress to the knockout stages, with the top teams having home advantage. The knockout stages continue using random draws until two teams are left to contest the Arora Bowl final, which this year was staged in Bettia's national stadium, the Stadiwm Bettia.

AroraBowl I Report

AroraBowl fever hit Gabalfa as the Subarnas Volcanoes squared off against the Akani Sands Destroyers for the right to be crowned the inaugural champions of Bettian Gridiron.

The two sides had been by far the leading contenders for the title, both winning their respective conferences. In the quarter-final, Akani Sands squared off against a strong Sukatra Sabres side and came out on top after a bruising, hard-fought battle. Subarnas had things rather easier, cruising to a 45-7 victory against the Ceffinton Turbos.

The semi-finals saw both teams playing away. The Destroyers travelled to Northern Conference champs Porthbalfa, coming away with a 17-6 win. Subarnas had a tougher proposition against the Gabalfa Gasheads, but managed a somewhat confortable 28-14 win.

And so to the final, played at Gabalfa's Stadiwm Bettia. There was a great deal of pride and honour at stake, and so quite understandably this match started as quite a nervy affair. However, as the two teams settled down, they started to play the top-rate gridiron that they had exhibited all season long. This was an even, nip-and-tuck match right up until the final two minutes when the Volcanoes scored the decisive touchdown courtesy of star Quarterback Geraint Al-Shahaf's jinking solo run.

Despite the Destroyers throwing everything they could, Subarnas held on to claim AroraBowl I for themselves.
