The American Bulldog written breed Standard(s).
The American Bulldog is a breed of many different breed types.
Although the American Bulldog is ONE breed, there is a wide variety of looks and names.

Bully / Johnson / Classic
Hybrid
Standard / Scott / Performance

There are many registry's available to the American Bulldog. Finding the one that works for you will be your best bet.

The most common question I receive is; "Which is the BEST registry to go with?"
My answer to this is, there is no "best" registry, they all have their pro's and con's.
You go with the registry that will best suit your needs:

Like which one offers the most shows / events in your area?
Which registry best fits your dogs standard?

I suggest that everyone reads each individual registry's breed standard. Most clubs offer two written standards, some offer only one. Does your dog fit their standard?

Does the registry offer American Bulldog club(s) in your area?

How is the customer service?

What are the requirements on getting a dog registered? Some registry's make it easy to get registration papers on dogs that can come right out of the humane society or rescue. Others are much more difficult.

Your dog MUST be registered with the REGISTRATION CLUB that is hosting the dog shows you are interested in showing your dog in.

The ONLY ONE who accepts ALL paperwork is the ABNA. But the registy's do not accpet points won by their shows, because they accept ALL registrations at their shows. This means you can have NKC papers on your dog and the dog behind you can be ABA registred. And the dog behind him can be UKC.

You can register your dog with as many registry's as you want.So long as they accept the original form of registation on your puppy / dog. The smaller or less known registry's such as APRI or FIC, ACR paperwork is not "recognized" by the larger registry's and will not accept their paper work.

.A very common question is: "Whats the difference between the different looks?"

Maldarelli
 Bully / Johnson / Classic
These larger bodied, heavier dogs make excellent family companions and provide excellent protection around the house. These larger dogs also do very well in the weight pull competitions. These shorter muzzled undershot dogs are often most confused with Boxers or Mastiff Crosses,  I am always asked " what kind of Bulldog is that?"

They know its a Bulldog, But are confused because the Bulldog they know.
American Pitbull Terrier, is alot smaller and has the longer muzzle. And the English Bulldog that they know is alot smaller and has alot shorter muzzle.

** Because the bullier type dogs are generally larger bodied and heavier in weight they do not excel in Schutzhund type work. Although bully dogs can do bite work. Its harder for them to get over the requirements of a 6 ft. A-Frame, and other tall objects.
* There's always exceptions to the rule, But these are generalizations.

Strike Force's Fira
Standard / Scott / Performance
In temperament these smaller framed dogs make excellent working dogs, such as Schutzhund, Personal Protection, Hog Catching, Weight pull and other physical work. Because we have breeders specifically breeding for "certain" jobs finding one with the same interest is sugguested.
.
The Standard type: is often confused by the public as a APBT (American Pittbull Terrier). Because they have a longer muzzle, narrower head, smaller body. Even at shows, you hear comments like "Thats the biggest Pitbull I have ever seen", from spectators.

** But keep in mind, if you have intentions of working your Standard dog, but never get around to it, these drivey dogs can destroy your house and everything around it. They are bred for drive and stamina and if not properly worked these bred dogs can be your worst nightmare.

.......Bully Type Front ..............  Standard Type Front

Ch. Sch III, Boyd's High Jumpin Mikie
Hybrid
The Hybrid type American Bulldog is the creation of the "best" of both worlds. These dogs are the result of crossing a Bully type American Bulldog to a Standard type American Bulldog. They usually a heavier bodied, thicker headed then the Standard type American Bulldog.

The reason we have this strain of bulldog is, folks wanted a larger working dog, to do Personal Protection, Schutzhund and other canine sport work, this meant they needed a dog large enough to hold a man down, yet had enough agility to jump well, move fast, and had plunty of drive to do the training.

In each breed type, we have some breeders who can not leave well enough alone, and they breed to the "extreme" on both ends, Some bully breeders are now breeding some Bully type American Bulldogs to look more like Olde English Bulldogs. With their extremely short muzzles and extreme wrinkle, Some standard breeders have been infusing lots of pitbull blood for "extreme" workability they are producing American Bulldogs who look "extremely" like American Pitbull Terriers. Neither of these two examples are the "prime" example of the breed.

There are many. But only a few really offer the breed shows and clubs in your area.

Here is a list of dog registry's that accept the American Bulldog:

National Kennel Club ( NKC ) Web Address: http://www.nationalkennelclub.com.
The NKC was the first registry to paper an American Bulldog in 1969. The first AB ever registered was Johnson's King Kong.

The NKC has alot to offer American Bulldog owners, There are many events that can coincide with NKC shows, such as weight pull and more.

United Kennel Club ( UKC ) Web Address: http://www.ukcdogs.com
The UKC first recognized the American Bulldog January 1, 1999.

The reason I like this registry is that they hold shows coast to coast. It is an ALL breed registry, they register some rare breeds as well as recognized AKC breeds. This means you will show your American Bulldog against other American Bulldogs and against many different breeds as well. This means there is less political BULLDOGGER BULL SHIT going on.

They encourage children to participate in junior handling, it is a good source of canine education for the "next generation dog breeders". Read about what the UKC offers kids, by clicking here.

The UKC has alot to offer American Bulldog owners, There are many events that can coincide with UKC shows, such as weight pull, agility, obedience trials, and much more.

Some Registry's are not as credible as others and dont offer as much to the breed or its breeders.
Some of these registry's down right are just available to register ANY dog,
